Hello All, I wonder if you can help. My 2002 Freelander TD4 has started jumping out of gear when you put it in reverse. It feels a bit 'spongy' when selecting all the bottom gears (eg 2, 4, reverse) but reverse is the only one it pops out of. All the other gears seem fine.

Any ideas what I can check to try and diagnose the problem?

check the oil by draining some out ,if its blackish burnt smelling it needs rebuilding

Hello, I'll check the oil later. What could it be if it isn't black and smelling burnt?

eg: could it be a linkage or something?

Internal fault in gearbox, a bearing possibly allowing layshaft to move laterally disengaging reverse.

be VERY careful with the oil check - see the FAQ section. yu can bugger up yo box .
