So... I was talking with some friends down the boozer last night. One has a 1.8 petrol FL in 2WD with the VCU and propshaft stored in the boot, it has undergone 2 head skims and gasket changes. The other has a doosel on a 52 plate, but was being told that the head will need doing as they all go prematurely on every Freelander.

Is this right, surely the Freelander design isn't that bad is it?

The 1.8 rover k series does have it's flaws, mine had the head skimmed at 70,000 but it's now on 125,000 and still going strong, apart from the IRD breaking, the diff leaking, coolant ****ing out everywhere when the bottom rad hose split oh and a new fuel pump. Why did I buy a freelander again? If I had a reliable car how would i spend my weekends. I dread to think.

k series are okay provided they are built right after head gasket failuer, you can't go on the cheap with them, get yourself a good mls gasket either victor reins or genuine rover set, a new set of head bolts, if you get the rover set it has the uprated oil rail in the sump.
the elastome gaskets basically are rubbish, if they overheat the elastomers kinda just useless and then you end up with hgf

No the Diesels do not warp their heads as a rule. The TD4 is a particularly good engine if serviced correctly. The 1.8 Petrol is a bad design - K Series and it comes with an inherent head warp problem - they sold loads of them do there were loads of faulty ones - just one of those things.
My wife had a 2.0 D Rover engine one for 10 years with absolutely no bother and did 100k plus miles in it - I serviced it ( he says smiling cos I must have done a good job methinks!) we now have a 03 plate TD4 and apart from some faults that came with it due to bad maintenance ( now sorted) it's great.

Diesel best petrol for the brave
