After a lot of tooing and frooing I took the rear drive shaft off my wife's Freelander. Now the car is steering and driving nicely. So this lead me to the conclusion that the viscious coupling is knackered. My question is can the car be driven like this or will it cause damage over a period of time.

it is fine to keep the freelander in 2wd but you should remove both props and the vcu from the vehicle as one complete assembly marking where the props line up with the diffs and the position of the vcu support bearings.

i have been driving like this for a month now and its a great improvement around town driving , i took the complete prop shaft of and blanked the ird unit with a plate , better mpg as well
