I have a Freelander 1 1.8 with modified cooling system after head gasket replacement and after which it has done about 15k miles.

Over the last few months I have had about 3 times noticed that the idle speed was sticking at about 2k and only dropping after it was given a kick of throttle and it had become warm. I had previously fixed it with a throttle reset - 5 full depresses of the throttle with the ignition lights on but not running.

This time I have cleaned out the Idle Air Control valve and I noticed that it was black with fine soot. I used some sort of diesel engine air valve cleaner from Halfords and some tissue.

It seems fine again now... actually sounds better than normal with steady idle.

Should I do anything else? Change the oil etc

Thanks,

James

Hi James.
Give this a try.
Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the point the electrics turn on but not the engine itself. Press the accelerator down fully 5 - 8 times. Turn the electrics off and then turn the engine on. The revs may rise a little but should settle evenly after.
I had a problem after changing a throttle body. This is the Throttle position switch reset
