Just bought a TD4 2002 Freelander, can someone tell me how the glow plugs effect starting on cold mornings please? I wait for the light to go out, then turn ignition on to full position but the engine doesn't start? Many thanks.

the glow plugs hardly come on, just for less than a second.

is the problem worse when cold or hot ?

if when cold, could be failing injector, need to do a leak back test to confirm
if when hot, would be looking at cam position sensor

good luck

a common fault with poor cold starting is the injectors leaking back fuel.

The td4 needs pressure to be equal in all 4 injectors before allowing the engine to start. If one leaks back, it gives a low pressure reading and it fails to sart.

One way to test is to spray easy start into the air intake. If it then starts and runs okay, chances are it's a leaky injector.

You can get a garage to do the leak back or leak off test for you, or, if you do a search on here using the search pull down (not the google search box) you can do it yourself with 4 empty coke bottles, a piece of timber to fix them to, and some fuel pipe.

good luck.

Thanks Optimus Prime, the mechanic has had a look and it turns out it's a mouldy / worn starter motor lead which needs a clean and should work well now. Glow plugs are all good and fairly new, battery is also new.

Cheers.
