Its definitely not the motor, as someone quite rightly says if it works on the quick wipe or screen wash how can it be the motor. I had the exact same problem a month ago and I had to replace my wiper stalk. Got it for £60 directly from Lucas. Could of got one of fleebay cheaper but it was second hand.(£25) Landrover wanted £150 !!!
If you want to test my theory try turning the wiper stalk very slowly between settings and you will occasionally get it going or use a hairdryer to heat up the grease in the stalk. It works honestly !!! :):confused::)
Apparently its something to do with the grease on the contacts in the switch itself.

It could still b the motor, even it it works on some settings! Its speed is determined by the resistor bank the signal goes through, before it reaches the motor windings! At least that's how it works on the defender!
Test the switch before replacing the motor.
 
This appears to be causing quite a healthy debate now.

Sadly i haven't had a chance to check with my multi meter yet as someone mentioned on a earlier post. Will get this checked at the weekend.

So just to get things straight, i am still going down the same road as before ? Check with multi meter which will give me an indication of whether it is the motor or switch that is buggered!

Hairdryer idea sounds interesting but am a little unsure how i would get this to work in my motor and would the mot centre be chuffed if i started the hairdryer up before taking it for an mot so the wipers work. ha ha
 
Just another bit of info which may help.
When i quickwipe then turn the stalk the wipers just stop dead wherever they are until i turn the stalk off. Not sure if this indicates anymore whether it is a motor or switch issue.

If they do park when you switch off then the park switch, which is in the motor, is OK

Just so you know..... the reason for checking the switch/wiring etc first is if the motor works on flickwipe (fast speed) and with the washers (slow speed) thats an indication that both sets of brushes and the motor still work. There is nothing else except the park switch within the motor.
Frankly if you want to guess and fit a motor thats fine and it could work even if it's only bad connections at its electrical connector. But really it's better to confirm the actual fault before throwing money at it.

The Hairdryer is just to free up the grease in the wiper stalk.It may well work for a while after this without heating it up. Did you try turning it very very slowly from intermediate to slow wipe and on to fast wipe.
This is a common problem in the cold weather on a lot of cars

Yep when wipers are switched off they do park when doing quickwipe. It's just when I quickwipe then turn wipers on the stop dead straight away. Soon as I turn wipers back off again they park back to where they should be.

I definitely want to explore all avenues before I start buying parts. I'm pretty stuck until the weekend for getting a chance in day light to take a look.

I'll give all of this a go as all of this has occurred since we had the really cold weather. Before they worked fine. I can remember an odd time or two when the wipers took a while to get going (intermittent wouldn't work only faster speeds). After The car had warmed up all modes worked perfectly. These were cold times too in the morning
 
If the wipers, self park the motor must be OK, it self parks using a permanent 12 volt feed and an internal switch, but needs a switched feed (from your stalk ) to start them moving.
