Hi, thinking buying a Freelander 02/ to 06 ish, If I bough a diesel with engine problems, would I be able to swap the engine for a petrol v6 2lt, jaguar X type engine, As I have a jag X type with a real nice 2'1lt, V6 petrol engine. Can and will it fit into a Freelander. What would be any problems in doing it.

Nice expensive and time consuming project doomed to failure.

I do admire brave people who don't just take the cheaper sensible option of fixing or replacing the engine.

Hi, why Iam thinking of this is I might get a diesel vehicle for next to nothing, but I've never owned a diesel car before, and it would be easy for me to run a petrol.

Er no. We'll anything is possible with enough determination and ingenuity.

The list issues would be endless, for almost no benefit.

Why not just buy a V6 Freelander, which has 20 Bhp more than than Jag boat anchor ?

I guarantee that fitting an engine from a different manufacturer into a Freelander designed for a diesel engine is going to be more difficult, than learning how to use a diesel. :confused:
 
I would not even try. Not sure is even legal to swap diesel to petrol, dvla wise. Not to mention endless issues, and don't think it will be 4x4.
Everyone's advise is no, unless you have alot of time and a garage available, and a cash gun.
 
flog the jag for bits and put the money towards a td4 Freelander 1 as much power as you need, cheaper to run than a petrol and enjoy the next 3 years of your life not trying to do this project
 
Why buy diesel if you were intending for petrol.

A v6 FL1 or I6 FL2 would of been a better choice.

Aaaa yes you are right I apologies I somehow believed you meant cheaper to run than a petrol 1.8 standard. In this particular case, any standard freelander is cheaper to run than this "project"

I was always put off the 1.8 petrol because if the head problems, you would be luck to find a petrol one here at the time the freelander 1 was being sold most French only bought diesels and nearly never a 4x4 petrol, that has changed a bit as the price difference between diesel and petrol fuel is now a lot smaller and the plan is to get them to the same price, at that time diesel was 2/3 the price of petrol
 
Apart from anything, the 2.1v6 is a gutless engine.
It's 10% less powerful than the V6 Freelander, and the bottom end is made of cheese.

The OP should simply consider a V6 FL1.
TD4s under no circumstances are cheaper to run. Maybe on fuel but that's about it.
Agreed. The 1.8 petrol isn't quite as good on fuel as the TD4, however head gasket aside, it's just as reliable and cheaper to maintain than the TD4, as it doesn't have expensive injectors, high pressure fuel pumps and turbos to go wrong.

That is for the fuel alone. But a head gasket swap is 500 eur let's say. Then on the td4 is 500+ just to change the flywheel and clutch. And you are still left with injectors, turbo, pump that can and will go wrong.

We are offtopic anyway. Project seems VERY difficult, but not impossible.

Not impossible, but a completely pointless way to use a good engine. Better off selling the Jag 2.1 V6 and buying a Freelander 1.8 (cheap) or a V6 (not so cheap).
