Hi there
I'm hoping someone can shine some light on whats going on with my 2002 TD4 that I bought on Saturday.
I have been driving around fine since Saturday but the engine just stopped dead. I got it off the road and had it recovered to my regular mechanic. he'll get to it tomorrow. their was a strong smell of diesel outside so i'm really really hoping that it's something like a fuel line. Any ideas?

What were u doing at the time? Like accelerating? Cruising? And is there any lights on the dash? Does it still turn over alright etc? If it was fuel I would expect the engine to splutter then die instead of stopping dead.

Thank you for your reply, I was cruising at the time (80 kph) and then their was nothing when I went to accelerate. No noise at all, the oil and battery light came up on the dash. I drifted off the road to a safe spot. I spoke to my mechanic and he said that it was ok to try and restart the jeep. I tried but nothing, it was turning over but not starting. No spluttering at all.

Ah! Well there's your problem- It's a Jeep not a Land Rover!

Fair point, its my Land Rover and not a jeep, i'm missing the point on the Rodent in the fuel filter? are you recommend I change the filter? would this cause the very intense smell of diesel outside?

Mike did a very similar thing the other day after a fuel filter change. Luckily I had just got home and it died on the driveway (after dumping 10L of diesel everywhere!!!!) It was one of the snap in clips with a button push release that had popped off on mine. Mechanic re connected and added zip tie belt and braces to make sure it don't happen again!!
