Hi

New to forum but been reading posts as a guest for some time.

I have a driveshaft problem on my 1.8 Freelander Petrol (2004)

Strange clunking noise when driving and when I looked underneath this is what I saw.

Not stopping car from driving, seems to be a counterweight or balance weight or something but have stopped driving it as it is clunking under the car
Any ideas?

Yep........funny thig is some have them some don't........the thinking is those that don't have fallen off like this one and just been removed.
 
that one will not bolt back on it has come away from the middle a new one is required go to Bells
 
Thanks for the replies lads. Yes it is relatively new. It says April 2013.
Trouble is bought it from a dealer in April/May and its well out of its 3 month warranty.

Couple of questions now that I know what it is

Can It just be taken off altogether so that the car is mobile until a replacement is ordered?

Is there really a need for it if it can be driven without it?

It looks like it's just the (a) cover. Have you tried to see if it'll just press back on?

You could perhaps push it back on and use some gaffer tape or similar to keep it in place as a temporary measure.
 
Hacksaw through the metal floating ring and remove it, if you get no vibration I'd just leave it.

Yeah it was pressed back on and tapped with a hammer (by Auto Rescue) and it came off again on first corner. Will try hacksawing it off and see how it goes while getting a replacement

If you can't hacksaw it off? It will be hard work ;) tie it up out the way of the shaft with zip ties. I'v had to do that very thing when I had one come off while away. I tied it to the bearing housing with lots of ties, it was fine for months!!

Angle grinder may be easier than hacksaw if you've got one, suggested hacksaw as I didn't realise how thick it was:(
 
I'd still be taking it back to the dealer as a manufacturing defect...it may only be a few months old but they should last longer than that!
