hi can anyone help i have just brought a freelander td4 on a 05 plate the clutch is so heavy makes your leg ache in traffic. it does not slip at all and the peddle seems the right height do you think its needs renewing ? if it does how do i tell if its a dual mass before i take box off regards

pretty sure td4 is a dual mass , unless its been converted to a solid flywheel at sometime when the clutch has been changed, as regards to heavy clutch mine is quite heavy in fact every manual land rover i;ve owned the clutch has been quite heavy .

Td4 is certainly fitted with dual mass flywheel as standard, but there are solid conversions available. I don't think you can tell without removing the box.

Your problem can be divided into two categories:
'Normal' - The standard FL Td4 clutch is quite heavy compared to similar SUVs due to the reasonable torque from the engine and 4wd system. Could it be you need to get used to it? Also, it's possible some sort of HD upgrade has been fitted. Check recepits supplied with the vehicle.

'Abnormal' - Stiffness from pedal pivot, faulty master, lines, slave or pressure plate.

Not much help, I know. How about finding a mate with a similar car and trying out their clutch?
 
Mine is heavy too, tried a friend hippo and his was not as heavy but still not exactly light. My guess is its the slave cylinder and not the clutch. I am not even going to try stripping it till Summer comes.
