hi guys. I'm new to all this so please be patient with me
I recently got a freelander and it seemed the clutch died. Turned out the hydraulics went on it. The mechanic suggested to save money he switch to a mechanical clutch, which he did.
I'm just wondering, what difference will this make to my vehicle? Any advice is appreciated.

I'd be interested to know what engine he did the conversion on, and the gearbox type.
I think it's possible on some Hippos, but not on the GETRAG gearbox. (without other engineering . ally welding etc.)
Personally...... I would go cable over hydraulic anytime... as long as the lever is at a suitable length to get:-
a) correct pedal position for the biting point and release
b) not so heavy you need both feet on the pedal to change the clutch.

Ask him for a drive of his and see what you think??
After all... we need to ask..... "why were these cars fitted with Hydro Clutches in the first place?"

And.... if there is a conversion kit for the GETRAG box.... I'm in!

Hi there. It is actually the a 2006 TD4. He's already made the change and I'm driving it as we speak. Nothing feels different really. Just wondered if there was anything I should be looking out for. Cheers

So, how much did this cost you?
Because modifying a td4 gearbox to get rid of the hydraulic system would be a MAJOR engineering effort.....removing the hydraulic concentric slave/release bearing, modifying the casing to take a clutch release fork, finding a suitable normal release bearing, making up a cable mount on the gearbox and modifying the pedal to take a cable......
Im not saying its impossible but the work required would probably cost about ten times more than just replacing the hydraulics as normal.


Maybe....just maybe there has been a misunderstanding somewhere and he has replaced the clutch as normal but instead of replacing the dual mass flywheel he has fitted a solid one? if so, thats a common conversion and nothing to worry about - it makes no practical difference to the car.
 
Or (Dave)..... maybe the GETRAG box has been ripped out and a PG1 fitted and Converted..
I think the PG1 can be converted as the arm goes outside the bell housing, but the GETRAG box.... my god... how much modifcation would be needed.
Maybe.... Single Mass Flywheel as Dave says, but Cable clutch on a TD4 GETRAG - No chance.... not without spending a grand or two!

Any chance of some under bonnet photos? - Especially the front (radiator facing) side of the gearbox, and the bulkhead next to the brake fluid reservoir?
 
PG1 would be a doddle (once removed) to convert to cable, as it just means fitting a cable operated arm off, say, a Rover 25 PG1.

However.. the clutch pedal would be useless, as it's only set up to PUSH, not PULL, which the cable setup requires. Then there's the fact that the freelander places the master cylinder much further away than on the Rovers, so the clutch cable wouldn't even be long enough.


Until, as others, I see pics.... I'd be wary of this claim that he changed it to cable, especially as you claim pedal effort is no different. Cable clutches are always heavier.
