Hi,

There is a grinding noise from the rear near side so I removed the brake drum and expected to see the brake shoes worn through to the metal and rubbing on the drum but there was plenty of lining left. The grinding is caused by the drum rubbing on the backplate because I can see bright metal at the bottom of the backing plate. Thought it must be the wheel bearing but there does not seem to be any play when I try to rock the wheel. The grinding is intermittent. Done 61,000. What can be causing the drum to rub on the backing plate.

You've had a stone or something get caught between the drum and backplate . bend the backplate slightly so it doesn't touch ..

i thought gaylanders had a hole in the floor and you put yr feet thru the hole and use em as brakes?

Hello there,

I have the same problem. N/S rear brake shoes binding with the drum after applying the handbrake and car has sat overnight. Also have a grinding noise coming from underside somewhere, I think it might be a wheel bearing unless it is connected with this brake fault. Any ideas oh wise ones?

Check the mechanism is all nicely greased up and operating properly, shoe springs all in good order and connected up, spigot not gummed up, cable is not snagged or knackered, usual stuff. Finding the noise will be a case of going round bits in turn really if it's not happening when braking.

Hi peeps,my wife told me of this problem with her car so checked it out,turned out to be a leaking brake cylinder on near side rear.So replaced cylinder with new shoes on both sides and problem sorted.Also gave me chance to adjust handbrake too which kept being put off (as you do)
