Hi all,
After some advise, going to by a Freelander 04 plate TD4 would like an automatic but need to use it for towing(5 or 6 times a year ) is this wise? Heard about requiring an after market gearbox oil cooler but would like to know where to get one? How much are they? and how easy are they to fit?
 
In comparison with the manual TD4, the auto is slow and thirsty. Don't know about the oil cooler thingy but do you want an auto that badly that you would spend extra money on top of buying the car to have it??

I have an 06 TD4 auto and erckon the Jatco box is one of the best out there - copes no worries with towing. I have one of Rover rons magic boxes fitted and enjoy better performance and fuel economy than from an unmolested TD4 manual.
 
The TD4 auto is not a bad vehicle for towing, especially as you are only going to be doing it occasionally. The auto will be handy for slow speed maneouvring with your trailer.

i got an auto and would recomend it..
fuel economy is down a little but i've not noticed a dip in performance over my last td4 manual.

only thing is it takes a bit of getting used to!

it seems well suited to the car in my opinion.
 
Also prone to gear change probs, showing itself in poor and hesitant changes - particularly noticeable in sports mode if yu wanna check.

several companies do after-market coolers, because the auto box runs hot.

Yes agree it does take a little getting used too but takes the effort out of town driving. It gets about 26-27Mpg round Sheffields hills but this goes upto about 38-40Mpg on a motorway cruise. It also great in the rough stuff.

It has an optional "sport" mode which basically holds the gears longer and it can also do a manual change by taping the lever up and down - can't say i'ved used it much though.

I believe some of the hot climate models have an "air blast cooler" for additional cooling - not sure if its an option on UK models or can be added later. Dealer seem convinced mine (02) had one when I replaced a wheel arch liner - but I couldn't see it. It's supposed to be somewhere at the front passenger side under the front wheel arch/bumper.

More of an after thought, yes I admit the 1.8 k-series was never a bespoke piece of engineering.
Having said that, heavily modded 1.8's with something in the region of 200bhp is fairly impressive esp for an engine that weighs as little as 95kg. Always punching above its weight class, but then you know me, always fighting for the under dogs LOL

yeah - I know that, ya grey haired, slitty owning, pastie munching, grammar school oik - but 38-40 even from a TD4?

Just joined the forum in search of a bit of help.
Recently purchased a 2002 Freelander V6 for my day to day driving.
However, I have noticed a hot carbon type smell that I think is coming from the auto box when kick down is used. There is no smell when driving around sensibly only when pressing on.

It was mentioned in this thread about an oil cooler - is this what I need or do I have a more serious problem?
