Hi folks first time posting so don’t know is I am doing this in the correct place
I have a freelander 1 td4 2002 had it a year
Last night red battery light came on belt fine check it straight away
But made it home ok 40 min drive Have a really good battery only 5 months old so I suspect alternator fault would not start this morning just clicking we live on a hill so my friend gave me a push and it startedchecked the battery with engine running read 6,5volts and dash lights going crazy but engine seems to have a misfire and lots of smoke un burnt diesel will a faulty alternator cause this or is this something else was running perfectly before this thanksfor yourtime

A low battery will affect the running of the car as it needs voltage to fire the injectors.

Replace the alternator and jobs a good one

Thanks so much for your reply I have been really worried about it for some reason I have become attached to the freelander and
It just makes me enjoy my drive time so much more

Hi just a quick update charged the battery over night car started and ran perfectly so is definitely the alternator will replace and update this post thanks again for your help

Quickl question. Is the alternator covered in oil?

hi sorry for the delay no oil on it it’s quite clean looking

That's good, and bad. Good because it's been covered up before the oil filter has been changed, so good servicing practice has been followed. Bad because you're not going to have a definite reason as to why it's failed. In my experience, the TD4 alternator is very long lived, normally not needing replacement until well over 100,000 miles have been covered.

Hi thanks for your post I put a volt meter on the alternator sometime no out put then 14.5 v then nothing again in the middle of taking it out at the moment not a easy job well for me anyway lol will update post soon

It could be a simple brush problem. Cheap and easy to sort.;)

Hi nodge you were correct brushes are knackered and slip ring ( the copper bit)
Has wore away anyway as I was working on
It a local man came over and offered me 2
Complete freelander 1 diesels for £200
One is 1999 not td4 the other is 53 reg facelift so I bought these and got the alternator from the 53 plate so all up and running fine but my yard looking like a freelander graveyard but lots of bits to keep me busy thanks again for all your help no doubt I will need it again as i am new to freelanders

My alternator went tits up last week and is covered in oil. Can't tell where it's coming from, new alternator on order but needs to be cleaned. Any idea where the oil leak is likely to be from? Engine oil has never been low in 3 years I've owned it! 2004 2L TD4

If it's fresh oil, then the dip stick is the normal place. If it's old oil, then it's from the oil filter, spilled on the alternator when the filter is removed. It's amazing how many people (technicians normally) can't be bothered to cover the alternator with a carrier bag when changing the filter.
