today my freelander td4 auto 2003 was fine but went to take son to football this evening and there is this mad clackity noise. ive searched the forums for similar but nothing really the same .

the video provided is dark as it was pitch black. what you hear is from my phone hanging out window, bonnet shut. so yeah its super noisy and bloody embarrassing. its defo from engine bay area.

drove it to football and back, there is no loss of power or anything strange, all is good .the noise is only when at idle , as soon as you apply the gas it goes away.

any ideas people. thankyou!

Is it feeling rough through the car?
It sounds like an injector has failed or is failing.

Crank pulley could be delaminating, try taking the belt off to see if the noise goes, if so then you know, you could also peel back or remove the wheel arch liner start the car and see if the pulley is running true, maybe do a video in daylight for us, if it turns out to be the pulley replace it only with a corteco one link below.

crank pulley damper ?
or something associated with the aux. belt 'n pulley system ?

i think looking for metal shavings near the crank damper is one way to see
if it may be the problem ..

just throwing in a thought ..

oops Arctic beat me to it with added info :)
think i'll go watch / catchup on some tele.

hey Nodge. No it runs fine, like really well since I changed the big hose at front left of engine bay as rac had said it was blowing out so there was no boost.

It's just so bloody noisy at idle

Hi Arctic2. Thanks for the info . It sure sounds like that jackhammer video you put up.

I'm no mechanic , just trying to get ahead before taking to mechanic. Are we betting our bottom dollar its that pulley then in that case?

Also how safe is it to drive . I drove maybe 20 miles this evening and will have to do maybe another ten tomorrow to mechanic .

Thanks again

Thank you for your input hd3 :)

thanks nodge68 and a big thanks to Arctic2. i had thought even prior to this happening over last few weeks that the freelander had sounded a bit noisy. Hopefully this will dramatically silence the tractor a bit?

i ordered the corteco part from ribblevalley4x4ltd on ebay as unfortunately being in Northern ireland we get stung for high courier charges. This company waived the postage for me by contacting them direct so saved me 20 quid. Cost £125

i ordered the 2x GATES belts from ebay . Cost £25

hopefully all is here in a couple of days , booked in with mechanic so hoping done thursday/friday this week and i will update with how i got on .

fake pulleys??!!!! yikes.

i did speak to them and they said they only sell the corteco one . however.........

it was coming back with 140/145 i think as the vat made it £120 then courier to northern ireland , then vat on the delivery also . Our wee country always gets shafted. Guy even said himself he can send 100kg to belgium for £7 but a 3kg parcel to Northern Ireland was £20. always myhermes though but i kinda need it before xmas .

i will take a good look at the pully and maybe send images of any stamps i see. thanks again for the heads up on that

it never stops amazing me when the companies charge more to northern Ireland because from England it does NOT cost any more I keep emailing these companies but the never answer back I have often posted to northern Ireland and the same package to somebody 50 miles down the road and it is the same price no matter who you post with .

.

Steer clear completely no way is that corteco, these sellers use the words, and OEM as sales pitch, lots ebay sellers do it, few photo of true corteco below. you need it come in the proper box have the stamp on it, if it comes in a plain brown box I would want to know why? do listen to chaff about they are boxed for us by corteco etc utter rubbish,
