Hi all. Recently bought a manual 2003 Freelander TD4. A few minor electrical issues I managed to sort myself but maybe someone could help me with this - when I have my front wipers on and put the car in reverse, the rear wiper comes on. With the front wipers off and car in reverse, the rear wiper doesn’t come on. Has anyone else had this problem?? Recently replaced the rear wiper motor which was seized and the reverse light switch which had burnt out. Thanks in advance!!

Well that’s cleared that one up then!! Wasn’t sure if all Freelanders operated like that given the issues I’ve had so far!

It works on the basis that if the front wipers are on it is probs raining and when you go backwards you my want to see out the back window. It also assumes that you won't want a wiper scrubbing a dry screen every time you reverse. Damn clever these LRs!! :)

Well I never, Mine does this and I thought I had a short somewhere LOL. I have thought about this for years. Its one of those "I will get round to it one day" Things. I like problems that solve themselves :)

As Andy said.

It's completely normal for the rear wiper to only automatically wipe the rear window, when the front wipers are on. If the front wipers aren't on (presumably it's not raining), then why would the rear wiper need to wipe the rear window?

Don't nearly all modern cars do this ?
Yes. Every modern car I've owned for the last 15 years has done this, except for our current Mazda CX5, which doesn't. I'm surprised the CX5 hasn't got this very useful feature, as it has almost every other electrical doodad going.
