Hi, iv just signed up to ask for help with my freelander TD4. we’re at our wits end!
We changed the IRD box as it was leaking oil. After fitting it we fired it up and it started missing and blue/white smoking between 2000-3000rpm.
Its also that flat up untill 2.5rpm i have to keep it in 1st up any incline!
Theres nofault codes showing
Weve changed MAF sensor. Boost pressure sensor and boost solenoid valve.
It seems to solve the issue and runs fine when the MAF is unplugged. Has any hadsimilar issues and can help us out.

Is the misfire under load, or when revving it off load?

misfires with no load. Seems like its slow revving up then the misfire sounds very drummy and the smoke starts bellowing out, the smoke is eye watering, id say like an unburnt diesel.

When the MAF is unplugged it revs alot quicker and the misfire goes away (or no where near as noticable) with only an odd puff of smoke

That's the 2K misfire. It's common on some M47 engines. Mine does it too, and always has. I put a video on YouTube some years ago, showing the exhaust colour.

As far as I know, no one has actually found a cure for it.

Sluggish acceleration is often down to week MAF signal (old Bosch or cheap aftermarket MAFs) and leaking vacuum pipes.

Does yours smoke along with the misfire?
The vacuum pipes all got changed about 2 years ago as they looked perished. I have put a cheap MAF in. What MAF would you recommend? That would explain why when the MAF is unplugged it flys through all gears. Cheers

Genuine Bosch only, as cheap ones don't seem to work correctly. However a new genuine Bosch MAF didn't fix my 2K misfire, or anyone else's that I know of. Mine also misfires on a light or trailing throttle while driving.

You need to find the cause of the flat performance, but it's possible it's the MAF. You really need to get the life data to find out more.


The smoke won't fail the MOT, as the diesel smoke opacity test is done at full throttle, where there's little smoke. ;)
 
I had a mechanic run live data and he seemed to think everything was running ‘ok’
It was only a handheld launch kit, having said that he did all test under no load. Would that give sufficient info for the MAF or would it need to be driving? maybe a garage with more software may tell me diffrent.

All MAF and fuel pressure tests need to be done on the road, as off load the readings are skewed.
 
Ok mate great. I dont suppose you know what readings we should be getting? Just so i can see with my own eyes if i get him to re do the readings
 
The exact figures vary between vehicles, but should be around these.
The high pressure rail should be between 25,000Kpa at idle and 135,000Kpa at full power.
The low pressure fuel rail should hold over 350Kpa at full power.
The MAF readings should be around 450Mgl and 700Mgl at full power.
Boost pressure is normally around 270Kpa at full boost.
All these are from memory, so I could be wrong.

Search the forum for Freelander RAVE (workshop manual). People have linked to downloads. It's got tables for all values and variables so takes any guesswork out. ;)
