Hi All. I did a search and did find a thread from 2010 but didn't know if there was an update to the whole replacement key and fob scenario.

I purchased a Freelander a few months ago and it only had one key and one fob. I wouldn't be bothered normally but the general rule of life suggests that as I only have one key the chance of losing it is increased massively.

How do I get a replacement? What is the easiest way to do this? Is there some sort of kit I can buy to code my own keys? Can I buy a used fob and program it using the normal method of fob programming after removing a battery?

Thanks all

You could take it to a LR dealer with a big bag of cash. I'm in the same boat as you but the cost of a spare key and fob is almost as much as the car is worth.

LR dealers can order them.

Go to LR with your V5, asking for a replacement key. They'll charge you an amount of cash, but you're guaranteed a working key.
If you want to save some money, only buy a correctly coded key and unlock it in the old fashioned way. ;) Be warned that locking with the key, doesn't activate the movement sensor inside the vehicle.

I suspect there is, but it'll probably cost more than a new key from LR.

No. The fob is coded to the CCU. The 5 button pressing procedure simply re-synchronises the rolling code of the fob. They're all unique to the CCU, so you can't use any old fob, without the CCU being programmed to accept it.

Thank you Nodge68.

Just had a chat to my local Land Rover dealership and its £160 for a key. I think I will look on eBay for a set of keys and ecu set and just replace the lot. Or just carry on with one key.

I was going to have a chat to them and a local key cutter tomorrow to see what sort of prices are available from them. Good input tlo - thank you.

As tlo says, get a key done at Timpson, probably around the £40 mark I expect. I believe that you can programme a second hand fob to the car so if that's true you could get one from Ebay and then visit your local LR dealer or an independent that has Hawkeye. I'm not sure how much they'd charge for that but considerably less than £160 I would think.

I brought 2 keyfobs from a breakers it cost £10 for them and then £40 to get them coded at the rover garage, I was happy with that.
