Hi,

I have an 08 Freelander TD4 just needing it's first service, and have been quoted £372 by a land rover dealer, this seems a little on the pricey side!! I knew it wouldn't be cheap but nearly 400 quid!!! Anyone else had theirs serviced by a main dealer that was cheaper than that? Also I have looked into a specialist servicing it they quoted £199 which is very reasonable but does anyone know if it affects the warranty?

Cheers!

as long as the garage carrying out the work are VAT registered and they use parts and fluids which comply with the specification laid down by the manufacturer, there shouldn't be a problem (for now, I think the ruling might be up for review in Brussels late 2010).

An example is that the invoice clearly shows the type of oil used in the oil change i.e. viscosity and so on.

what's being VAT registered got to do with the price of fish ?

twas something to do with being a registered business I think. I didn't make the rules, just interpretted them. If the garage were VAT registered, then they are traceable, and the manufacturer can check that they are a bona fide trading garage, and not just some guy in his garden who can crack out an invoice in excel.

hmmm being VAT registered means nothing in reality, some of the best mechanics i've known have been sole traders for years

rules is rules i suppose

Seconded: also get a copy of the LR service schedule for the vehicle and make sure all the boxes are ticked etc and keep it with the service history.

If you go back to LR with a complaint and the servicing garage is so small as to not be VAT registered then LR will think there is something fishy going on;).

Just been charged £421 for a three year service by Stratstone. I was shocked!
Worst item of all was £45 for Fortron fuel treatment. Engine oil was £95!
The retail price of the Fortron is £45 to treat 1000 litres so it shouldn't be more than about £2.50 per tank-full - I'll be complaining tomorrow!

Update on the cost of Freelander servicing March 2010:
Wow, talk about inflation. I have just been quoted £593 by Stratstone for a 24000 mile service on my 08 Freelander 2.2 auto. I checked with the next nearest LR main dealer and was quoted £518. This is in itself a big difference in pricing between one main dealer and another, but is still a lot higher than I was expecting.

Jesus, that's scandalous! I'd be hunting out my nearest independent LR specialist very quickly!

Can't stand dealers - a complete rip-off IMO

Does anyone have a service list like the Freelander 1 version we have that lists all the service jobs for each service milestone, for the Freelander 2? Then we could see why it's so hex-pensive to service a Freelander 2.

Freelander 2 is the most expensive LR vehicle for service cost. Even more than Range Rover TDV8.
Dunno why. They've got a big chart on the wall at my local stealers with all the models & mileages and their standard charge for each.

I have just used my local independent Land Rover specialist workshop for the 2nd year (24000 mile) service. They used genuine LR parts and and the cost including VAT was £287.48. That’s less than half the £593 that Stratstone were quoting for the same job. Fair enough they don’t have a fancy showroom or wash the car down, but it’s within walking distance of my home and has saved me £305.52.

Word of advice call your independent first then call stratstone and they are supposed to match the price as long as it is like for like

Shocking prices.

I just got offered £686 from local LR dealer for 36k mile service.

Back to indy who did the 24k one (and MOT) for £260.
