My 2007 Freelander 2 - headlights staying on. Nothing on the light switch will work, no side or headlamps, fogs or headlamp adjustment.... the indicator stalk won’t put the main beam on.... but the lights will come on as soon as the ignition is switched on but light switch still does not work.... lights go out when ignition is switched off. I checked the F9 fuse and replaced the headlight switch assembly but to no avail. So anybody got any ideas what to do next, I have seen this problem on another forum but it gave no answers.
No the main beam does not work via the stork only the dipped headlights, no recent work and it came about after I was out the other night and headlights were on the odd occasion flickering on an off, now they just stay on as soon as the ignition is switched on so in summary this has happened over the last week. Shame really as this is the first real problem I have had with it over the several years I have had it. I love the Freelander and to be honest I drive it more than the Discovery Sports I also own which sits in my garage most of the time
Also note when the headlights were flickering on and off I tried the headlight switch fog lights etc and all worked at the time however two days later when I was out again nothing on the switch assembly works apart from the dipped beam headlights come on with the ignition switch

No relays in the modern BCM.
It sounds like the headlamp drive Field Effect Transistor (FET) has failed, as FETs normally fail permanently short circuit (pass current all the time).
Defiantly get the codes read, as the BCM should monitor it's output for problems like this.
Thanks, I have given up trying to fix it myself and booked it into a local independent dealer recommended on this site Claugton Service Centre but can’t get it seen until 7th May so fingers crossed. Must be the month for me with Land Rover odd problems as my Discovery Sports has now come up with a hazard warning “ SOS system Limited Functionality “ and it will not reset?. Will let you know how I get on with my Freelander 2.

Did you ever find out the problem, mine is doing the same but the cruise control has stopped working as well. I’ve got it booked in next week but just wondered what it could be. thanks in advance.

Booked into local Land Rover Dealer last week and they said no fault codes were showed when they did diagnostics check.
They want to replace headlight switch assembly @ £220 (booked in this wednesday) but reading what Oults already did I'm not convinced it's going to solve the problem.
Can Oults or Squeakin please advise what fixed it for them !!

Mine is still not fixed, I boight a new switch assembly but that was not the problem. I have been told it could be the lighting control unit. I am planning to take it in later this month as I have been away and not had chance to have it fixed.

no - they tried the new switch & that didn't work (as I expected ) so they took it back off and said that they'd do some wiring checks.
Came back and said they'd found high resistance on a wire (possible break) but to trace it back would involve having the car for a couple of days and a strip down of the dash with a likely bill of anything between £600-£800.
Told them no thanks but still had to pay them £60+vat for the work done - probably cheap but I know the guys well as I bought the car from them from new.
I've got it booked in with a local auto electrician this Friday - apparently he's very good so I hope he can find the cause.
I'll report back after he's had a look at it...

Hi Oults. Did you ever get this sorted, I have the exact same problem and would be interested to know what it is.
SORTED - the auto electrician found the break - said the wiring loom was a bit tight in that area and had caused the break. He told me it was a bit fiddly to get to (but not a dash out job !!).
He said it was on the passenger side (under the dash obviously) - near to some sort of junction box but was speaking electrical terms which mean nothing to me.
Anyway, everythings back to normal including the cruise control - total cost was £200+vat - still a bit expensive just for a wire break but cheaper than Land Rover wanted !!!
