Hello everyone,

I have a 2012 Freelander 2. Bought 3 months ago and I had a chance to drive my car only a week. Unfortunately car mechanics couldn't find the solution. Here is the issue;

As you can see in the attached images, there is a blue dark smoke coming from the engine or somewhere behind the engine. It's not happening always, I couldn't figure it out exactly under which circumstances it's happening. So far I went to 2 different car mechanic and they changed lots of parts. Here is the list:

TURBO
EXHAUST THROAT SEAL
EGR SEAL
EGR COOLER
AIRFLOW METER
OIL FILTER
AIR FILTER
FUEL FILTER
DIFFERENTIAL OIL
Exhaust manifold seal

And some other seals plus periodic Maintenance.

2 weeks ago mechanic told me its fixed, they said it's tested quite a long time and they didn't see any smoke.

I finally start to drive my car 2 weeks without an issue, this morning it happened again. Smoke come back from front bonnet.

Does anyone have any idea what might be the issue?

Yes, and you'll be ****ed off because you've wasted loads of money on parts that clearly aren't the issue.
This smoke is most likely from oil which is dripping out of the air feed pipe to the turbo pipe joint. It can be fixed by making sure the joint between the feed pipe across the engine and the down pipe to the turbo joint is sealing correctly, and the clip is tight. Sometimes the rubber seal splits or gets deformed by incorrect fitting, in which case a replacement cross pipe is needed.
If the pipe joint is sealing correctly, then the cam cover seal is likely the fault, so will need replacing.
 
Unfortunately 4 days later after we changed the clips from turbo head to Exhaust, today smoke appeared again. I ll suggest to change tip of the exhaust system , not sure what to do other then that.

Frelander 2 2007. May not be dripping oil.

I've had a similar thing happen to me over the last week. Light bluish smoke coming in from back of engine (to the left). I'd had the Air Filter Tube Assembly (off a whgile ago to clean the dripping oil from the joint closest to the turbo. I'd done this for cleanliness as no smoke at the time. It's such a small amount, but builds up over time.

Re the smoke - This week, the engine started smoking once up to temp, so much so that I took the Air Filter Tube off to have a look. Once I'd cleaned it up, there was a slight film of oil cleaner at the point the flex pipe is joined to another part of the pipe. Probably enough for smoke to escape (when under pressure) especially as it was so close to the breather hose.

To test the theory, I ran the engine without the pipe in pace (tight/stocking over the turbo end), and the crankcase breather hose puts out a decent amount of smoke under pressure. Thumb over the breather hose (photo 2), no leaks from further down the system. No smoke coming from anywhere else.

I've ordered a new part, hopefully this sorts the issue out.

part number LR009801 Britcar are the cheapest with VAT and shipping - £137.12 I wouldn't be tempted to get a used part.
