Hi
My wife's TD4 (2.0d bmw engine) got a bit carried away last night

she said it was making a funny noise, and blowing a bit of white smoke out the exhaust. she asked her dad to have a look, gave it a little rev twice the second time it took off white smoke everywhere, ignition key out, kept on running for around 5 mins.

I guessed it could be turbo seals allowing oil in to the inlet, but the only check i've had chance to do it the oil level, and its over filled way above the top of the max marker. i know it was not overfilled at all when i last serviced it. Also it's dumped most of the coolant on the road but not sure where from.

any educated guesses at the cause, and the chances of the engine internal having survived?

I would guess that your coolant is in your oil and that the head gasket has blown
Good job it shut it's self down fingers in that it's not done much damage
 
If the engine ran away then it must have done it on its oil..............

Never heard of coolant self detonating !

If it ran for 5 mins flat out then the chances are that the engine is Kaputt

Sorry not to be more positive

First thing to check is what is really in the sump - oil or water

than look for oil in the induction piping all the way from the turbo to the inlet manifold

chances are that the intercooler is full of it and that will confirm that the turbo blew a seal and engine oil was blown into the inlet thereby causing the run away

No but if the coolant is empty and the oil is over
 
Can't this "running away with itself" be caused by the crankcase breather filter having not been changed often enough (or at all) ??
 
Sounds like the turbo has blown - causing the running on and white smoke..

The "oil" level being high is also probably coolant as the engine has most likely grenades its self.......

But any one can diagnose over the net....... There ain't no substitute for being there and seeing for yourself.
