Don't know if I'm being overly sensitive, but the Freelander seems to fluctuate at idle ever so slightly.
The rev counter does not move, and only really noticeable if left in drive with the air con on.
If in N, with no "drain" then seems fine.

Don't think it surging from 800 to 100 rpm, its just a slight millisecond blip in the revs, that is affecting my OCD. Not even sure if others would notice it.

Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions other than plugs/leads etc.

Are you sure the engine speed isn't dipping slightly as the AC compressor clutch modulates in and out?

Bad plugs or leads put the MIL on;)

If its just when Air con is on it's probably because the compressor cuts in and out drawing energy from the engine.
 
I agree, think that's what it will be. Just never noticed it on a car before. Especially one with a 2.5V6 largish engine.

My 5-7 litre Buick did it, it's quite a power drain, leave it on and watch your mpg plummet .

I was quite surprised how little the AC made to my MPG, this trip was done in 30 degree temps with the AC keeping us nice and cool...
I've just done 1,500KMs through the mountains of the South Island NZ with 5 people and our luggage in my L Series. Lots of gear changes over mountain passes etc up to well over 3,000ft. Got 37MPG avg. Not to shabby - very pleased with that.
 
Seriously though using air con uses about 8-10% more fuel but that's not as much as driving with the windows open.

It's not the size of the engine, more the response speed of the engine and the amount of power it's actually producing at idle. The KV6 engine with the auto box is horribly sluggish by comparison to the manual box counterpart. This is due to the 30Kgs + of torque converter bolted to the end of the crank. The KV6 was designed as a fast revving light weight engine, so had a flywheel of just 10Kgs including the clutch assembly. So when it's fitted to the auto, it's is slow to respond to variable loads imposed on it. Don't forget that at idle, the engine is making just a few HP. When the AC clutch kicks in, an additional load of a couple of HP needs to be compensated for, which takes a second or so to meet. The IACV needs to allow more air in and the fueling needs to compensate for the extra air. The ignition timing is also altered to suit the new load imposed on the crank. This is where the extra weight of the TC slows response time down, giving a noticeable dip in RPM for a brief time.
It's completely normal and nothing to worry about.

On a side note. Make sure it never runs out of coolant in the tank. A KV6 pops it's head gaskets in seconds if the coolant is allowed to empty out of the heater tank.

Oh and make sure it has 4 identical tyres with the least worn on the rear. And definitely do the one wheel up test. ;)

Done and done.
Made sure when purchased had four of the same tyre/same tread.

Was going to remove prop, but someone mentioned the one wheel up test. Did that and all fine, so quite chuffed with myself, as seem to have bought a gud un.
