As BB said but also any on the out side of vehicle but I think light bars are exempt number plates have to have proper spacing

hi

the way i’m reading it , that any exterior light can’t have a LED fitted unless the light assembly was a manufactures original specification to accept a Led bulb

i’ve got halogen headlights and upgraded the sidelights to led, but now , will have to refit them back to halogen

i assume then if u replace the entire upgraded led light assembly it’s fine, internal leds are exempt,

agree, complete designed led light bars, led complete light clusters assembly etc are fine

also think a switch has to be installed to aux spots/ lightbars in order it can be isolated to either come on with main beam or not

assume on the td4 the original egr has to be refitted ????

have enclosed some links for u, hope there useful and u didn’t mind me posting this lot, lol

A similar issue exists for LED bulbs that are sold as upgrades. Pictured is a normal Halogen bulb, above an equivalent, LED conversion part. While these are legal to use within the interior, they are not permitted in any exterior lamp, at the time of writing. Like HID Conversion Kits, this is because the unit’s optics are designed to work with a filament bulb, not an LED type. Recently, a case was reported to us, where an insurance company turned down a claim, because a rear number-plate bulb was fitted with an LED conversion bulb. However, even reputable retailers sell these bulbs but they should be marked “for off-road use only.”

New Standards on MOT From May 2018

Advisories are being replaced with minor fails. These are all pre-written & approved by DVSA. You will still get a pass but they will be noted on your test certificate. Manual advisories are still being worked out but may disappear completely.

Those of you who have changed your standard headlight bulbs for HID's will now get a major fail even if the aim is correct. It has always been an offence to fit HID bulbs to halogen headlamps so the MOT is now in line with that.

Reverse lights are now part of the MOT for any car registered from 1st September 2009 (59 plate onwards). Daytime running lamps (DRL's) & front fog lamps must work on vehicles registered from March 2018 (18 plate onwards).

Engine Management Light is now a major fail. It must come on with the ignition and then turn off when the engine is started.

Brake pad warning lights are a major fail

Handbrake with excessive travel is now a major fail. Before it would only a fail if there was no reserve travel.

Contaminated (dirty) brake fluid is a major fail. Not sure how that will work as the MOT tester isn't allowed to remove the fluid cap.

Oil leaks (engine, gearbox etc.) can be a major failure if they are deemed large enough.

It seems they have removed the failure for tyres not being fitted according to sidewall instructions. Inner/outer or rotation incorrect.

Any modifications/removal to emissions related devices, this includes DPF'S and EGR's is now a major fail.

Where a DPF canister has clearly been cut open and re-welded, it will now fail.

A vehicle fitted with a DPF that emits any kind of visible smoke during the metered test will now fail

Emissions limits for diesels registered on or after 1st of January 2014 have been reduced. All diesels will now need to pass the limit that was set by the manufacturer when the car was new. This can be found on the VIN plate. For example the current limit for your diesel car may be 1.50. That could change to as low as 0.30 with the new rules.

Heard rumours the test here ( itv ) is going to get tougher from may.
It's very basic at the moment. You drive your car through various sections, lights, brakes etc. The bonnet is not lifted, windscreen wash isn't checked, tyres can be really bald, don't think they even check wheel bearing or suspension wear.
Thankfully phoebes runs out in April so may be ok.

You are the lucky one I had a cortina mk111 it was a fab car top of the range and the 2ltr pinto engine it was in the days of customising every part of the engine I could have chromed I did even every nut and bolt , bigger in let’s and out let valves and so on I then also put orange lights on the front wings at the bottom and mr plod pulled me over and then I got a fine , and as soon as it is a month from my mot I get it done so if there is anything I can get it done but you only have max ten days to do it in , the son in law was happy this year as not even the dreaded advisory, it’s the wife freelander next month I am just hoping.

That’s how it used to be in Southern Ireland

Think it's all down to the tester, I had a yank for over 16 years, it had red indicators and black n white number plates ( both illegal on a 1973 )
I sold it 4 years ago but kept in touch with it through the gov. check mot site.
Only last year it failed on both of the above !

Re earlier lighting issues my old car had sealed beam units, I changed them for halogen conversion units.
Obviously a great improvement re safety but would that now fail ?

As I said many get caught out by taking car in early and it fails they think their safe using the old mot.
Soon as its logged as a fail you don't have an mot !

No it wouldn't fail, as the light unit is designed to use a halogen bulb. If you were to fit an LED bulb instead of a halogen, it would fail.

Had no choice anyway as at the time couldn't get 7 inch sealed beams.
Luckily it was the outer which has hi n low beam the inners were single filament ie hi only

E marked halogen conversion lamp are available for both 5 3/4" and 7" sealed beam units. I've go a complete set of 4 for my 72 Avenger GT, for when I eventually get it finished.

Aahhh the good old hillman avenger, my dad had a 1600 super estate
Yes I know there available but wondered what the purists would make of them Say in a concourse show etc.
Back to the at the time hillman he trusted the brand as had a 59 minx.
Had nothing but trouble with the avenger though, two engines within six months of delivery, they had to send the engine back to Scotland every time.
He was glad when an apprentice totalled it when sent out to get lunches !

I will try to find out for you but I am sure they will be on site soon one includes if you have a tow bar on the back and it includes electric sockets for more than 7 pins they have to be tested oh how I wish I had a good brain they I could remember some of the things I was told but 1 I remember is emissions are changing a freelander must be no more than 3 percent .I think mine was 1.2.
?????? not fitted as original????

Years ago, in my semi boy racer days I had a 405 Mi16. I fitted some yellow running lights to the sides of the front and rear bumpers, a bit like some Volvos had, and US spec vehicles have. One MOT guy failed them because they were non standard. It was about 1997/98. Not really relevant but I thought I'd mention it.
Sorry new on here. I'm looking for advice,
My mate did the fuel pressure harness replacement on my 2004 td4 sport.
car started fine prior to him replacing harness
he has since admitted to fitting wires into wrong place in ecu.
now my td4 wont start, and temp gauge when ignition on is showing high also cooling fans running all the time.
I put wires in proper place but still the same
would I be right in thinking a new ecu will be required.
HELP

Hi Skyblue35. Welcome.
You're best off starting a new thread for this one, rather than tacking onto a running thead with a different title. ;)

with hids even if the aim is correct if they have been fitted as an after market then they would fail as a lot of them do not have self levelling.
