So, not sure what I’ve managed to do to it but will try and explain the situation….
Was minding my own business going through what I thought was a well know and passable Ford in the midlands.
As I was on the approach I noticed that there were a lot of tractor tracks but thought nothing more and carried on, one I got into the water noticed that the larger tractors had dug a grove leaving only a lump of concrete / tarmac which the hippo was not able to get over, hit it with a bit of a bump and quickly got into reveres to back out of a potential drowning…..
In reverse clutch nearly out and eventually got a bit of traction and managed to back out, Diddnt feel like the back wheels were doing much but it’s still got all its 4x4 gear attached so not sure there.
Got it back out and the clutch started slipping and banging a bit assuming because if got very hot and wet, then took the hippo to a pre booked alignment and tracking session (bear with me)
So got it back from the alignment and that’s all done but now I’ve noticed a bit of a whine at low speed coming from the front, wondering of it could be a result of the alignment or the reversing out of the Ford ina bit of a panic ?

apart from that all seems fine don’t know it=f anybody else’s has had anything similar or a case of watch it and see how it goes - does seem to be anew low speed wine though ??

any advise much welcomed
 
Yeah it deffo did have water draining from gearbox area when I got it on the lift nothing from the IRD though - will give it a day or so see if it improves. I also wondered if the alignment could be putting new pressure onto a different area of the bearings as it was out of alignment before (perhaps too much of a coincidence)
 
Not sure what the problem here is, but may be worth flushing the gearbox, IRD and diff and replacing with fresh oil, if only for peace of mind?

The breathers on our Freelanders are very low - I am sure someone somewhere will have made breather extensions - anyone have any links?

Is it much of a job to change the gearbox and ird oil (any ideas what type) I know e breathers your taking about at the back of the engine at the top do both gearbox and ird have breathers.

also forgot to mention that when I had it on the lift there was light green water dripping from the side of the clutch / gearbox more watery than oil ??
 
Any dripping needs investigating. Green liquid sounds like clutch fluid, especially from that location, if it's a TD4?

Can you see what part if the vehicle hit the concrete? If it made a bang, it must have left some evidence of the impact.

Maybe the impact has cracked a component casing, which has allowed the oil to drain out?
 
Light green water may also be coolant - and in which case, hopefully incidental to the new noise! Definitely needs more investigation.

Changing fluids is not too difficult - the advice is to ensure you can get the fresh oil in before letting the old oil out! Sounds odd to say that, but sometimes the fill screws don't release easily from the casing casting...
 
Oil changes sound like good maintenance if they haven't been done for a while anyway. Loosen fill bolts before the drain bolts.

Given above, I'd check levels of coolant and clutch fluid - top up if necessary and see if they then go down.

I'd also be inclined to see if I could determine a bit closer where the noise is coming from.
 
Hi! I'm totally new to Land Rovers, but I've just purchased an old Freelander 2, when on the test drive we heard whining at lower speeds as well, it seemed to go away as we sped up, before we bought the car the dealership had it checked over and found there were issues with the power steering pump. Hopefully picking the baby up tonight!!

Hi, welcome to LZ & Freelander ownership.

Make sure they've fixed it!

The F2 is a very different animal to the F1... and the F2 is not old. The F2 is new. My F1 is old - it could drink beer in bar in America.
 
Thanks for the reply’s much appreciated, have changed the gearbox oil (no evidence of contamination) both filler and drainer out and back in with fresh oil noise still there. Coolants all good but the wine persists, I’m wondering if the green fluid coming from the two holes between the gearbox and the clutch was water mixed with clutch dust draining out when on the lift ?
Clutch fluids all good and still have good pressure on the clutch pedal (clutch all working fine)

I think I’m going to have to have a look around the brakes to see if something got wedged in there causing a low speed noise but I would have thought that would have cleared itself by now - will carry on and let you know when I find it ;->

The undershield took the brunt of the knock with a dent and scrape to prove it, the actual cases/sumps didn't get touched by the looks of it.
 
The PG1 will take all manner of abuse, but the IRD is more critical on a FL1 - and the appearance of the oil will be very important (hopefully no silver glitter!!)
 
Thanks for the info - not changed IRD oil yet but have located fill and drain points. On the list to do when it’s next in the air in a week or so. Wheel bearings and breaks all good nothing trapped, worn there ( did find a worn track rod end - added to the list)
I think I may be being over paranoid re the noise which could have potentially been there all long - the more I think about it.
Also checked and no obvious wear in any of the prop shaft bearings..

will change the ird oil as a matter of maintenance and fingers crossed no shiny bits.

Will be back with an update in a week or so.

I've had the same problem twice, after going through large puddles. Both times it was the propshaft centre bearings failed, due to be flushed out with water. The second set were only 2 years old, I should have know better after my first experience. Remove the complete propshaft and you'll probably hear the rough centre bearings if you spin them, or take it for a quick drive minus the prop and see if the whine has gone.

Hi only about 10 months on the but you were spot on! Centre carrier bearings replaced and noise now gone - yippie… only thing now I think I have a vibration above 50 mph could be wheel balancing or prop shaft not gone back in as it came apart ffs…. Still,progress (although slow)
I’ve read a couple of things on these, some say the prop can only go back in the same way, others say it can be put back together out of line to cause vibration. Guess I could just keep it below to all the time lol…
