My fathers 2000 X 1.8 GS manual has recently developed a fault where it is difficult to get into 1st and second gear, and reverse gear, the clutch was replaced a year ago at a main dealer and the master cylinder has just been replaced to tackle the problem but it persists, the car has covered 60k and has FSH all the remaining hydraulics are apparently in perfect order any ideas? Thanks

Ah, yeah, I had this problem before. What I did was to change the gearbox oil and use the Freelander more often. Eventually it all work out on its own. But there are times (rarely now though) where the problem will come back but only for a short period.

Also just another piece of advice, when changing gears, try to 'poke' the clutch down (with your toes) as far it can go (you might want to remove the floor mat to this) and then change gear.

check the arm/release fork in the gearbox, they tend to seize. Get someone to pump the clutch and see how far it moves. If it hardly moves then it's seized.
