Hello,

I'm the owner of a 2001 3 doors Td4 Freelander.

I appologize for my poor English, I have a few questions about how to make a facelift upgrade to my car.

I'm about to buy a 2005 5 Doors Auto Freelander and I want to use it for spare parts.

What I want to do is :

- Change front bumpers with fog lights.
- Change rear bumper.
- Change whole carpet and seats.
- Change entire dashboard with Radio.
- Change Doors panels, the ones with switch on them.

I've got everything that I need on the 05 Freelander I guess.

I've read how to install the rear bumper but I didn't find anything about the Fog lights and standard headlamps, what is different with the wirings ?

About the inside, what should I be aware of, if I want to put the 05 Tachro on my 01 Td4 ? (Plugs are the same ?)

Does the inside panels of the dashboard and center panel where the Radio and gear level are fit my car without too much difficulties ?

What about the door panels with swithes on them, are there major changes instead of the center armrest ?

Thank you very much for your help, if you have some threats about that I would be very thankful for it.

Yann

I'm sure i read somewhere that the dashboard wont work in the older models because the speedo/ecu etc are all interconnected and it isnt backwards compatible.

Pretty sure in order of least severity:
The carpets will swap over
The door cards will swap but wiring will need to be extended/altered.
The bumpers will swap but the bodywork will need to be cut/reshaped to fit them
the dashboard wont swap without some major changes to the ecu/speedo.

It would probably easier to put the td4 engine and extras into the 5door car.

Thanks for your answers, it's because I want a 3 doors with the soft top for summer and the 01 is also manual. Forgot to tell that the 05 is an V6 auto and it cost too much for me, it has also the gearbox that is dead, so it's not interesting for me.

Do you know more about this speedo/ECU ? Where can I find informations about that ? Could I take the ECU of the V6 to put it to the Td4 with all the wirings ?

The rest seems pretty easy to do.

Cheers, Yann

I believe Disco Mickey replaced his headlights and bumper etc with facelifted ones on his 1.8 Turbo Freelander. Not sure what all was involved but would be surprised if it was too big a job.
I would have thought changing the interior and dash would be a very big job as the ECU would be involved.

The exterior stuff is relatively easy but some minor modifications to the body will be needed. Some trimming of metal and stuff but you can copy the V6 body shape here.
The interior is a different game altogether. Nothing really swaps over. The switches are different being linked to the BCU. The earlier car doesn't work that way. In the V6, everything of an importance is linked on the CAN bus. This isn't the case for the earlier TD4. So basically it's not easy unless you really know how to make complex electronics work, doing something they weren't designed to do. The dash is also on the CAN bus so can't be swapped but even if the electronics were interchangeable, the milage wouldn't work properly as one dash is locked to one car. So outside stuff is easy. Inside stuff isn't except the seats. They should swap ok. Dashboard can't be swapped, not practicality anyway.

Control module wise the differences between a 2001MY and a 2005MY are minimal (change to immobiliser during 2003MY and different ABS module but otherwise virtually identical.

Obviously big difference in modules between a V6 auto and a Td4 manual.

Door cards etc won't swap between a 5 door and 3 door as doors are totally different size!

With time and patience and ability to strip down two cars and make it all work then you can change the dash over but it won't be a straight swap electrically

Read that the earlier speedo will fit in the facelift dash/fascia. Not sure if the airbag system is plug and play, but its independant from the engine ECU so you can swap the SRS ECU as well.

There is no way you can use the V6 engine ecu on the TD4.

A lot of jobs cos differences are massive.

01 gauges are can controlled, but not fully. 05 gauges are full can with stepper motors... Older one don't talk with ABS, SRS systems and newer don't talk with older ones. You can't use V6 instrument pack in Td4
Door cards from 5 door to 3 door won't fit due to missing fixing points and bigger doors in 3 door.
A lot of small changes in wiring are present.

I've done the external facelift. As you've got the complete car it should be easy. You need to make a few body mods to fit the rear bumper and headlights. You also have to modify the headlamp wiring to make dip beam stay on with main.
