Going back to the original post, why not let it whine and see where it goes, it will be worth no less with no clutch at all!!

Shame you are a long way out, only need an L series to complete my set as I've got the Td4, 1.8 and V6!!

Thx for the messege, i just dont want to be stuck / broken down somewhere......... i also a light burning smell is comming from the lower part of the engine........ so not sure how safe or sensible it would be to still drive it

Yes very true, is the problem I’m having an issue that can happen only when the cars hot ?

Just took it for a 20 min drive no noise at all and all gears changed fine ‍♂️ The only thing I did notice the clutch pedal seemed a bit grainy if that makes sense, I don’t know how else to describe it, but no burning smell this time ???

Worth a punt, I'd replace the hydraulics if you can feel it on the pedal. Maybe the clutch return is not happening fully due to hydraulics and the burning is the clutch slipping. Get the operating arm lubricated and checked for free movement, then if that doesn't work look at replacing hydraulics. Less than £50 and it might just work!!

I totally agree with @andyfreelandy . Like I said earlier in the thread, problems are usually the hydraulics, usually because the release arm is seizing - and easy to fix.

If you don't mind a little work...

Lift the bonnet.
You'll see a big black cover over the top of the engine. It has 3 small and easily accessible bolts securing it that you can see. Remove them and the cover.
Engine is on the left, gearbox the right.
Bolted on the side of the gearbox (on the side facing the front of the car) is a metal bracket that has a smallish round cylinder (clutch slave cylinder) clipped to it - it has a plastic pipe coming out of it routed round the engine bay to in front of the driver and a rod coming out the other side.
The rod pushes against a metal arm (clutch release arm). Follow that arm down and you'll see it disappears through a hole in the side of the gearbox (bellhousing).

It is where that metal arm goes through the gearbox that causes most problems on L/K Series. As Andy says, lubricate where it goes through the gearbox (its advised to drop a couple of drips of engine oil on it at each service).

You can then put that cover back on the engine.

It is likely that that arm going stiff has caused other issues - mainly with that bracket on the side of the gearbox - it can bend and weaken it. As Andy says, and as you can imagine if you have done the above, it is easy-as to replace, even the whole hydraulic system is because it is a 1 piece sealed unit including master/slave and piping that simply clips on - unbelievably simple - no bleeding etc. And cheap.

Good luck with it.

As said, L Series are becoming more difficult to find, prices are at least 'stable' and they are likely to be getting seen as collectable classics soon. Please don't scrap it. At least sell it to someone who'll appreciate it. A lot of old skool Land Rover drivers are buying Freelanders these days (they won't admit it till there's proof one is sitting on their drive!). L Series are perfect for them, gives them a semi-agricultural feel to their vehicle :D

Thx
GrumpyGel for the info... unfortuantly i really am not mechanically minded and no garage can seem bothered to help over here. They just want to replace the clutch but i dont want to pay for that around £550 if thats not the problem.

1 Landrover specialist even said would cost £200 for them to even give me a quote ???? wish i could find someone local on this forum who is handy as wouldnt mind paying someone who cares and i really want to keep this on the road.

To add an update, i have been driving it the last week........ no noise at all but again today same noise but its not every time i release the clutch.....

UPDATE::::::::

Today was out driving and noticed another Land Rover Specialist Garage, who were abit more helpful they took it for a little drive and said its defenitly the Gear Box Imput Bearing ?? .............. and said will be a gearbox out job and quoted £1,000 Plus so looks like i will give it a wash and put it on ebay see if anyone wants it rather than scrap......... Just wondered if its still ok to drive like this or will i cause more damadge (Until i can find a suitable Replacement)

That's my guess from the symptoms you described. ;)

That's probably about right, it's quite a lot of garage time, even though the actual bearing and seal will be pretty cheap.

so looks like i will give it a wash and put it on ebay see if anyone wants it rather than scrap.
That's a sensible move.

It's already knackered, so it's not really going to make any difference.
My daughter drove her Fiat 500 for a whole year with a noisy input bearing, before I could find a suitable replacement gearbox to fit.
I'd just get the oil level checked, and use it until a replacement vehicle comes along. ;)
