Well, tomorrow is 2 months of ownership. I was just about to write a 2 month new owners review. It HAD been faultless and I have been really happy. However today . Went to do the school run , returned back to the car and turned the key. There was nothing. Would not even turn. Battery is new so I could not say it was flat. No clicking noise , just the noise if the fuel pump.
Tried to start it for about 30 mins. Called out recovery. Waited.
Googled it while I waited and found a few others have had this problem too. One topic said press the key fob about ten times . Open lock open lock etc .
Stuck key it and then started first time
WTF ?????
Any ideas ? . I have parked it up outside and will wait a few hours before I try again

What year is it. What shape are the keys? If the pump primes but the engine fails to crank is sounds like the immobiliser has kicked in. Did you notice what the red alarm light in the dash was doing when it wouldn't start?

It's 1999 . Have been out to it again and it has started. It's the old fashion rover key lol
I don't know about the red flashing.

If you have the old non coded key , the fob contains the code instead. Sometimes the immobiliser doesn't pick up the code so the engine won't turn over. If this happens lock the car and unlock the car a few times. This should do the trick.
Oh and make sure you only have 1 coded key on the bunch as it confuses the alarm ecu

Well . Went out to start the car again. Back to sq 1. Won't start. Same problem . Red light is not flashing when the alarm is turned off. Tried both sets of keys . Both fobs have brand new batteries .
Help

mine did this - turn key, dash lights came on but nothing from the starter motor - after searching on here it turned out to be the thin wire at the back of the starter motor, it just needed a wiggle / push in - been ok ever since...yours might be that, its worth a check.

Sounds like a bad connection on the starter motor - clean up or replace the connections on the starter motor and ensure they are secured (especially the thin cable) with a cable tie so it doesn't drop off

Well. Went out to it this morning . Did not start. Located the starter motor and fiddled with the 2 wires . Hey presto . Starts . One wire must of been loose .

The small wire often corrodes. Pulling it of then refitting it normally does the trick. A quick application of WD40 will keep it corrosion free ;)
Glad it's sorted and welcome to the DIY world of Freelander ownership!
