PS Did you manage to keep the 4WD and if so how did you mate the gearbox?

From the pictures I've seen, Mikey has used the standard Freelander PG1 gearbox. This will bolt up to the Turbo K series no problen. This also retains all the 4WD bits.
 
A little side-note...

The L series engine backing plate, fits straight onto a T series.


ie: buy an L series powered early freelander, split engine from its backing plate, bolt backing plate to T series (chop off the pump mount, as it's now defunct) and bolt straight up to the Freelander PG1.

Using F/L solid flywheel and HD L-series clutch kit

Doing it this way retains the whole 4wd setup, as intended. It would have been much, much easier to use the Rover box and DMF, but would only have been 2wd...

Another slight hiccup with ECU issues. As the newer FL uses CANBUS for the rev counter, temp gauge, cooling fans etc, there need to be some nifty wiring mods done too.

Will have a whole afternoon at it tomorrow, after a trip to the local breakers, to pick up some wiring looms to cannibalise. Spare time is a luxury just now!

It's more complex than using the L series end plate, that's for sure. I did extensive research into this so I could make my V6 Freelander into a manual. (V6 shares the same bell pattern as the T series). I could have done it but decided it would be easier to get a Discovery instead.

Turbo pipework turned up today! All fitted, running and almost good to go :D

New front brake pipes, along with stainless braided hoses

Took it for a quick spin, on my private road...

In soggy conditions, it will spin up all 4 wheels.
Managed to burst the centre silencer, but then it is 12 years old, and had been parked up since May this year. So can't complain

New pipe ordered for tomorrow, and hopefully MOT'd for Friday/Saturday
 
It might be wishful thinking but do I hear a blow off valve doing its thing? :D

Awesome job. I'm looking at fitting a VVC motor to mine - have all bits needed just need to careful nut out the electrical side of things.


It has the bog standard factory fit dump valve currently fitted. Sounds a bit louder than normal as it's using a big cone air filter
 
I love the idea of the 1.8T in a freelander. Landrover should have done it years ago and if someone were to write up a 'How To' for this swap, (hint hint) others might follow and save a few hippos that would otherwise be scrapped.
 
Managed a few (crude) 0-60 runs this evening

1.8 - 0-60 is 11.1s
KV6 - 0-60 is 9.8s

I recorded a fairly consistent 8.2-8.3s :D
