Any advice please , my 2003 freelander seems to be sluggish, I struggle to get revs above 3.5-4 k , any ideas to what is causing this

Dirty Idle valve causes uneven idle and over revving when it should be idling at 800ish rpm.

Shouldn't need a fuel pump and filter at that mileage but I guess it is possible.
Bad fill of petrol?
Whats the history, did it happen suddenly or over a period of time?

Ahhhh!
He broke it and couldn't fix it so sold it on. Was the timing belt changed recently? If so double check the timing, one tooth out could cause the problem or as Freelance says the fuel pump.
What about plugs, leads and coil packs?

The 1.8 K series is a nippy motor so you have a problem.
Wasn't sure if an 03 model had a distributer as my 04 doesn't. These engines are very common so any half decent mechanic should be able to sort it but if it is revving smoothly then probably not. If it revs lumpy then go for it.

Hi, check that ignition system including the plugs themselves. Air filter new / clean & serviceable? Idle valve is easy to clean - just spray some carb' cleaner into it and repeat if necessary, I'd also check the fuel pressure from the pump and maybe replace the filter. Are you using the correct grade of fuel?

Something very wrong then. If you are handy with spanners then start going through all the standard stuff including whats already been mentioned.
If not then any half decent mechanic will have it fixed in no time.

I know you'd probably hear this but - have a look at the exhaust system in case it's damaged / blocked.
