Does anyone know if there are any clearance issues if replacing the standard 235x50 R18 tyres on the Freelander 1 18'' sport alloys with a slightly higher profile 235x55 R18 tyre.

In theory they should JUST clear the front struts, but.........

My 235/55 R17s have just enough room for me to run my finger between tyre and front strut / coil spring housing.

You are going to be 1/2 inch bigger and will be right on the limit - all things being equal, but.................

The size 235/55 is a nominal one and tyres my vary by as much as 4mm between brands and tread patterns - beware!

Also you must allow for the tyre to flex a bit under cornering forces.

Also your speedo will under-read by 3mph at 70mph.

Conclusion - this is risky - don't go there!

All makes sense, thanks, I think I will stick with the lower profile standard size then, I can never understand why tyres with less rubber are more expensive than a higher profile.

On a typical tyre.

Changing from 235/50/18 to 235/55/18 will result in a radius increase from 346.1 to 357.85.

The wheelarch difference comes out at 11.75.
