Which is Better All Around

We had a manual 1.8 K series and an auto TD4 and I must say the TD4 seemed better overall. The 1.8 just seemed underpowered in comparison to the TD4. Even with the auto box on the TD4 it felt quicker about town & generally a more refined engine. We never had issues with the K-series with regards head gasket or overheating however & reliability was good.. I'm in the market for another Freelander and I'm looking for another TD4 auto.
 
The TD4 auto is painfully slow. 0-60 in something like 16 seconds...

Standard 1.8 comes up in 11.8, which is a few seconds quicker than a manual TD4...

Economy wise, the 1.8 will see high 20's, with low 30's possible if driven gently
 
I'm sure with the 1.8, around town you are likely to see mid 20's and on a run it will push 30. The L Series will do 1/3rd more than that - ie mid 30's and push 40 - some recon they get 50MPG on a run - but I don't get anywhere near that. I'm sure a manual TD4 isn't to far off those L Series figures. Parkers quote the following (presumably taken from LR data) :
1.8 S / 11.8 secs / 106 mph / 115 bhp / 27 mpg
2.0 Td4 / 13.2 secs 102 mph / 110 bhp / 37 mpg
2.0 Td4 Auto / 14.3 secs / 100 mph / 110 bhp / 32 mpg
So comparing apples with apples, the diesels should be much more economical than the petrols, but a bit slower. Bung an auto box on a diesel and the economy benefits drop considerably and its even slower.

If you consider the V6....
2.5 V6 Auto / 10.1 secs / 113 mph / 174 bhp / 22 mpg
 
Having owned both, I would certainly say the TD4 is better, Mine has just hit 200,000 and still going strong, has the benefit of a timing chain so one less worry, the only major issue I've had with it was the IRD & Viscous Coupling and the slave cylinder but Viscous Coupling is common across both. Apart from that it's just had brakes, links and a few bushes.. I love it..

It also does the job in bad weather while I rebuild my 90 :(+

I'm up to 180,00 miles on my td4 and had the same problems as u, have replaced the rear suspension complete which made the world of difference , also fitting the synergy box transformed it

also replaced the rear brake lines and new brakes all round

is a joy to drive and nice through the country lanes , great in the winter and think a lot of people under estimate them in how capable they truly are

on my td4 auto get around 40 mpg on a run at a steady 65mph , stick the cruise control on so don't know if that helps by keeping it at a steady speed

did find fitting the synergy box made a difference

but know at the end of the day it's a 4x4. and not designed to shift , but am very happy with it serves it's purpose well

found the power etc fine , but imagine if I drove a petrol would notice the difference

I agree the 0-60 of the TD4 auto is slow, but I don't really ever consider 0-60 speeds. 0-30 is more useful for me to consider how nippy a car is. I'm not one to gun it from a standing start to 60 & most of us don't do that unless joining a dual carriageway from stand still. The TD4 auto was like **** off a shovel around town, but it's a torque'y motor so that helps. The 1.8 always felt slow. My father in law used to say it couldn't peel the skin off a rice pudding. I'd like to have a go of the 2.5V6 though.
 
Problem with the V6 is that every time you get to 50mph you have to slow down to enter the petrol station.

Did i read that the injectors on the V6 are capable of squirting over a litre/minute?

I'm the same , am happy with its performance etc, seeing it's just a 4x4 , suprised with the fuel consumption as well

is really comfortable, will pick up easily onto a motorway slip road , good turning circle , nice driving position and also having air con , cruise , is an added bonus

like being higher up as well

am always careful of the windscreen pillars that gives a blind spot , but can be the same with a lot of cars

would defentely have another one and was so nice going from a series Into a hippo
 
Not sure what my manual 2001 TD4 does to the gallon, but I took it for a 100 mile round trip today and loved every minute of it - Got the same trip to do 2 more times next week.....Can't wait :)
 
I've been carefully tracking my fuel economy since I got my K series 1.8 FL1on the road last year. Over all I'm averaging nearly 31mpg. The last 4 fill-ups have averaged just over 34mpg. The best I've ever had was 37.1 mpg.
Parts from the Uk are reasonable but freight is a killer!
 
My '02 TD4 gets about 32mpg on my usual urban commute (7 miles each way, mostly 30mph roads but a short run down a dual carriageway). This was driving like a saint, but even with a bit of a heavier right foot it returned just about the same.

Did notice an improvement (before I started tracking it) on a longer run coming back from a holiday though.
 
Since the head gasket being done....
Put £60 in the tank..got about 300 miles...but most of that if not all was local short trips...stop and start....
Before the head was done only got 180miles..so it near double.
 
had my 1.8 a year now my first mot in it (since ive owned it ) get a good 27 mpg but a lot of short trips
and lots of hills. and apart from the vcu messing up its really good.
i love mine and cant con-plane about it.
 
Just come back from caravaning around Lincolnshire towing a continental beast with my TD4 Auto got 36mpg when going about places and 30 mpg towing my tin tent is 27' long 8' wide and 8' tall and weights 1500kg.... I don't think that bad....
