I made this little poster to put on my notice board in my office at work (a rework of the Rifleman's Creed)....

Because above all else in my life (bar my Girlfriend and my daughter) my Range Rover(s) are the best thing in my life....after a stressful day, I can relax in the knowledge that on the way home I will feel cosseted and special as I waft along on air with a V8 playing its addictive tune....nothing in the world comes close to that....and it pains me to see what a mess JLR are doing to the Range Rover brand.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool Range Rover addict, ever since I was a 6 year old boy and saw my first classic in 1984 when a chap up the road bought one, I was in total awe of this machine and ever since I have loved every last nut, bolt and gasket of them....

Without a Range Rover - I am nothing!

If the Range Rover were a rifle, it certainly wouldn't be an AK.

Which rifle would it be, or do you have another comparison?
 
I have had Land Rovers of one sort or another for most of my life including several early Range Rovers and now on my third P38. Early Range Rovers just rotted away and I now miss my LSE. The P38s have all been fairy reliable but only because I have TestBook. It seems that to be able to run a Range Rover including the later ones that every one needs a computer diagnostic kit or sync mates to carry around as you are sure to need it. Can't do long journeys without worrying that the engine will overheat. I offroad a bit and whoever put the BECM under the drivers seat wants hitting on the head.
Love the cars though. Niggles - not enough storage, a floor that slopes down to the outside so anything dropped falls on the road, Having to dimantle the dash every six months or so for failed parts that should not fail such as blend motors built on the cheep, and having to replace 20pence worth of 'O' rings on the heater pipes due to poor access. On early Range Rovers you got an access panel so to be ale to change the intank fuel pump! not now the accountants have won again.
I do diagnostics and on an L322 we are scanning something like 19 ecu's !! this is stupid

The drive to make you only to use Dealerships is wrong. Many Dealers or Stealers charge to much and could't care less. Our own Dealer does not stock anything "Oh we can get it next day if you pay extra"!

no i run most of my vehicles on londoners recyled chip fat, sellafield CNC chuffin loved that when i rocked up with 400 litres of dodgy looking liquid in the back of the rangie last week. Mobile bomb alert!

its crap, just like most modern cars, JLR's engineers are obsessed with filling the car with tatty rubbish that no one needs. Bluetooth ? why... im driving and talking on the phone is a distraction

multisc cd system... whats wrong with pressing a button and putting another cd in

multiterrain response whatsit... ive got a foot and hands to steer with

with all the electric crap thats in there,

a) its heavy as hell reducing its mpg
b) its far to complicated when (not if) it goes wrong


then theres the styling

I buy a 4x4 to do stuff, not to look good (as previously mentioned) on the school run

Would the latest RR be still running around in 30 years time like the old ones, i doubt it!



Having done quite a bit of work for JLR over the years I know how crap certain aspects of the materials are in the vehicle.

JLR have gone to far to the saudi rich boys and bankers market share, all bling.

The range could be something great if someone stopped the new young engineers putting electric crap in it, and let some traditional engineers design it.

What do you mean by traditional engineers? What changes would make you feel more positive about the vehicle?

It's not the P38 in particular. It was more a compromise between wanting a Classic but also wanting a more modern practical RR - the P38 offers this - LR Heritage with modern practicality. It's also the only RR that doesn't rot. The comfiest 4X4 iv'e driven so far & despite the issues & cost of running i still love it....& i've never said that about any vehicle i've owned in the past.
The L322 was too influenced by BMW for my liking, later models being festooned with blingy chrome to attract chavs with a bit of cash.
If i had the cash available for an L405 i'd be buying a renovated classic as a second RR to my P38.
 
You should know what a traditional engineer is!

Sorry, was a poorly worded question. In modern cars, traditional engineering (i.e. mechanical engineering) is increasingly interwoven with electronic engineering to simplify user interaction with the vehicle, comply with regulations and in many cases, remove the need for the owner to do anything other than driving the vehicle.

This seems to be what the customer wants in most modern vehicles, an all-round vehicle that does what it says on the tin. Why, in your opinion, should Land Rover be exempt from this trend?

Nothing wrong in marketing that ethos.....elegance and simplicity....nothing wrong at all....

BUT, they have dragged the Range Rover brand into masses with the Evoque (Ejoke)....no, no, no, no, no.....

Range Rover is to mean the pinnacle, the best of what is already the best 4x4, the Land Rover....Range Rover takes it to its next level....to debase it it with a model such as the Evoque cheapens the brand, cheapens the image and now Range Rover is not the pinnacle anymore, it no longer means what it used too cos now they have a Range Rover (albeit a joke of a Range Rover) on your drive for relative peanuts....that is not what Range Rover is about....

Like Concorde, it was the best of the best, people paid extra as they knew they were getting that little bit more, what everyone else couldn't match....to feel special....now, with Range Rover being cheapened just to appeal to the masses is not what Range Rover is about....it is not meant to be for or appeal to the masses, it is meant to be the pinnacle....

I may be wrong, but this does feel similar to the introduction of the Freelander. It was seen by many as not belonging to the Land Rover stable of vehicles and detracted from the brand. Although, I do see on this forum that some people are now taking them off-road. What do you think?

im sorry, but people have been using the freelander offroad for a long long time, since it came out in fact.
