...but it's in a field and doesn't look to be worth more than 50 quid, if that.

Trouble is, that it looks like farmer's property, and I imagine he'll be "very attached to his dad's old land rover" which is a PITA.

Haven't had a proper look at it, but headlights on wings so 2a/3 and it'll be rusted to buggery coz it's been outside for a fair while.

Still, should be a project, all I need's a trailer, someone licenced to tow, and to find him and buy it.

Oh well, until then I'll just sit and plot...

One thing though, you say "licensed to tow". What do you mean by that? Since anyone with a full UK license can tow a trailer, or do you mean someone or some firm just to do it for you?

People who passed their test after about 1997 have to take another test to be able to tow a big trailer legally. Can't remember the exact details it's on here somewhere do a search.

max trailer weight 750kg without DVLA trailer test taken. No braked trailers allowed either or summat.Caravan requires test so prehaps less in the way in future....

Licence details here Driving Licence Because the MAM of a landrover (except gaylanders) is 3500kg, It means that you can only tow 750kg behind one. unless you have granddad rights or have taken a trailer test.

I have been looking into this and i was under the understanding that I cannot tow a nato trailer legally as I passed my test after 1997 etc. but it now seems I can:

Anyone can tow a Trailer up to 750Kgs unbraked.
I can tow my nato trailer as it is indeed braked and its unladen weight of 509Kgs and it can carry 750Kgs that totals 1259Kgs. This is less that my 90 and the combined weight of my 90 and trailer will not exceed 3.5tonnes.

Any trailer outside this will need a B+E certificate which is £105 to do the test plus car and trailer hire. unless you have old grandad rights. Jai

Actually a defender 110 (not station wagon) could a while ago legally tow 4000Kgs as long as the braking system is up to it i.e air brakes and not overrun brakes over run brakes are only good for up to 3500Kgs. Also a standard tow ball is usually only rated for towing 3500Kgs this would also need to be uprated.

Its how you read the law its confusing at first but once you get your head around it its ok.

Jai

No you can't the 750kg limit is the Maximum authorised Mass of the trailer. Trailer + max load weight, As your MAM is more than 750kg you can't tow it.

What you are looking at is the maximum combined weight of vehicle, Trailer and then you add to this the maximum weight the vehicle and the trailer can carry. If it exceeds 3500kg you can't tow it. however trailers with a mam of less than 750kg are excluded from the equation. So a landrover 90/110 or discovery & RR can only tow an unbraked trailer of upto 750kg mam.

It still can. But the cost of having a 110 or 90 converted to airbrakes and then getting a trailer also with air brakes just isn't worth it for the extra 500kg you'd be allowed to tow.

I used to drive a 130 5 tonne tipper with a 850kg chipper on my 750,3.5t licence.
As it was a landy the old bill dont see it as over weight.

Jai just to clarify the rules say you can tow a braked trailer if the trailer's mam is less than the kerbweight of the towing vehicle.and as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle don't exceed 3500kg. Because the MAM of a 90 or 110 on it's own is 3500kg you can't attach a braked trailer to it. unless you have B+E on your licence

find out who owns it though and anything is for sale for the right price speak 2 the guy or woman and if its been there for a while chances are they will sell for abit of extra cash were are you the worst they can say is no then you just look for another bt they could say yes
