How can you guarantee the person is the genuine owner?

Never said you were a moron. Just that if someone claims the stolen landy, how do you know they are the genuine owner. Perhaps the docs were in the vehicle when it was stolen?

Tell the police. If it is recorded stolen they will recover it or/and tell the owner. It is unlikely you will be able to make contact with the owner on ere. Then chance of them seeing yer fred is slim. Searching google with the reg plate does not find any eggsamples of peeps talking about it being stolen, online.

It has been relatively recently stolen. (Months not years)
The condition of the vehicle has changed between when we first found it and yesterday - so, the perps are potentially still active.
I've logged it with the police. However, and to my purpose of the original post - we know how busy and under resourced the police are these days.
So if the owner happens to browse by these forums, get in touch and I can tell you where it is. I suspect it would be quick and easy to recover if you are a "proper" landrover owner - by that I mean, mechanically minded & practical.
Otherwise, in the time it'll take them to follow up, I reckon it might well be gone again.

That's strange. Round ere if I report a car which is suspect and they ask a lot of questions about it we assume it's nicked. If so there's a police car blocking it in within 20 minutes and recovery carry it away after. It's an easy crime to stop when they're told where the car is.

If the police have informed the owner and the owner has told the police they will arrange their own recovery then it's job done as far as the police are concerned. If they have been unable to contact the owner then they will have it recovered to prevent any further crime/damage. The cost of the recovery will then be billed to the owner or insurer.
Just to close this off. Never heard back from the police or any of the forums I posted a “found” notice on.
But I returned a couple of weeks later and it had gone. Hopefully recovered by the police or the owner, but given it's hidden location, feels more likely the scrotes had come back for it.

l reported a stolen Land Rover that l saw dumped undamaged while out on a bike ride. The Police 111 never passed it on to the local force, so nobody attended.
The thief clearly came back for the Defender and (luckily for the owner) it was later found in his garden
