Can anyone help?

Replacing front discs & pads as they are knackered.

Had a quick look at the job: Double hex caliper bracket mounting bolts okay, but what size are the small retainers for the piston assembly?

Also, when I get the buggers off should I replace them like a service part, because i'm assuming they will be rotten?

With thanks in advance,

Hi there

Can't help personally but you can download the official workshop manual from a link in this forum that will under the braking repair section detail the entire process and parts.

LRO replaced the brakes on its 98? DT with EBC pads and discs in July issue I think so that is possible too.

Cheers

Adam

Adam,

Thanks for your help.

Mine seems to good mixture of parts from the different models. An example being parts listed for it dont fit because they are from early/later model with an unhelpful amount of imperial and metric fixings. Im only its second owner, so I know its history.

Thanks again,
Kevin.

When you buy the pads you buy a fitting kit which is basically 4 new bolts. Cost about 99p i think for all 4. These are the bolts that hold the Piston assembly to the caliper carrier. Yes the old ones will be rotton and the sliders may well be stuck. Mine was completely stuck had to get a oxy flame on it to heat it.

Hope that helps

I replaced the front discs and pads last weekend on my 4.6 HSE 1997. Compared to the classic Range Rover this is quite an easy job. Clean around the brake fluid resevoir and remove cap, place cloth around the resevoir to catch any spillage that may occur. Wheel off, undo 2 caliper retaining bolts, slide caliper backwards from disc and balance so as not to pull on brake hose, remove old pads, using a G clamp and old brake pad, push back caliper pistons to make room for new pads, remove two retaining nuts for caliper bracket, check for free movement in the slides both top and bottom, ideally, remove, clean and apply small amount of copper grease, refit, use an impact driver to remove the crosshead screw, if stubborn, then hammer & chisel it to loosen. Remove disc, this may need some help with the hammer, clean the hud assembly so that the surface is nice and clean, fit new disc, replace crosshead screw with new, clean and fit caliper retaining bracket, fit new pads, offer up caliper, refit two retaining screws, refit wheel. All fittings are metric, and all this can be done with a standard socket set, althoug I do suggest a breaker bar to help remove the caliper reatining bracket. Remember to press the brake pedal a few times before driving off so that the caliper pistons set against the new pads.

This is a basic step by step guide that should help you along the way, there should be no imperial fittings to any P38 as IIRC this measurement was phased out in car production some years prior to the P38 concept

Many thanks for the help. The service kit for sliders sorted the problem and the description was better than the manual.

Oh, nearly forgot. Mad hat man? or was it mud hole man?

Did you get your five stars because your a legendry knob or for your kiddy fiddling abilities?
You probably spend all your lonely hours on here because you have no mates, apart from your sexually abused dog who cares very little for you either and pud pullin/dinner mashin.

Can I nominate you for an extra star for you contribution and fine example you set to new members?

With thanks,
