Hi... i did something stupid and i didnt check my oil before i went on a long trip yesterday. After 3 hours of driving the engine made a weird loud noise like a machine gun and then i parked the car to see what is going on, switched off the engine and then i tried to start it again with no luck.. Opened the hood and it was smelling a bit funny and it felt hot..

My mechanic says now that i he needs to open the engine and see what is going on. He said this happened because i didnt change the oil.

Anything similar happened to anyone here? Could this be really serious with permanent damage?

are you for real ? do you think maybe the oil is an optional extra, designed by the manufacturers to make you spend a bit more money ? Just give the whole vehicle to your mechanic as a gift and tell him you are too damn stupid to own a vehicle.

you are wholly in your mechanics hands. if the engine won't turn over then it is knackered. end of.
 
And now for the sensible answers :D

Did you check the oil after you pulled over? Have you checked the coolant? You would have to not change you oil for a very long while for it to cause the death of an engine. sounds like your mechanic hasnt a clue so wants to get a bit of cash out of you wasting time stripping the engine.

how long has the oil been in there (time and mileage)
 
would most likely be cheaper to get another engine and next time check oil weekly and before a long trip and coolant level ,and get the rest off vehicles oils changed

It was night when this happened in the middle of nowhere and i didnt have a flash light, so i didnt check the oil. Mechanic said he put 2 litters in today though

I dont use the car daily , i only have it for going out on a trip sometimes. I did service the 600-700 km ago. And my mechanic always changes the oil with a service. This was maybe 3-4 months ago.

What about that loud noise in the engine? What could cause that. Also there wasnt any smoke or anything

It might help a little if you told us what your vehicle is. ;) It does rather sound as if your engine is cream crackered though but not changing the oil wouldn't cause that, lack of oil pressure on the other hand or serious overheating would.

first off ignore the usual comedians.... they make stupid comments either cos they aint got the knowledge to make sensible ones, or you were right in your assessment

2 litres down on oil shouldnt be terminal.
do you know what the temp gauge was doing.
you said it wouldnt restart.... we need to know if it turned over on the starter or not... any noises or silence etc.
did the red oil light come on whilst it was still running?

any water in the radiator?
terminal bang is often the camshaft drive belt breaking.

if its terminal because of oil id expect the crankshaft bearings to be seized so the starter wont turn the engine over... ... if it turns over but dont fire up id look at camshaft belt.
 
I think I'd get a new engine and drop that in, it'll probably work out cheaper in the long run.

It sounds like your issue is probably less related to the lack of oil and more to a general engine failure, either way though the engine is a bit knackered and probably does require a strip.
