Don't know what it is about the mk 1. It just looks the biz.
Not into buying a clean lhd GT then cutting it up.
Owner of the mint one won't budge on price. Concours price guide for a saloon mk 1 is 8k. The one in the ad above is probs unique but even so....

For my money the GT it actually looks straighter and more original, will have better gear ratios and taller diff nice motor

the second one is not very straight round the front valence, front bumpers well cocked up its missing the front screen trim and looks a bit molested, the interior colours are a mishmash a bit a miss there, and they did not do the strut top plates quick enough the wings stick above the bonnet

the last one is a 1200cc three bearing crank 48 bhp drum brakes, bit lacking today, looks like the door cards have been changed for ones from a super, still nice and straight but door shuts need adjusting .

Tricky to do much during lock down but these 3 have been around a while.
Can see the defects you describe now I look closely but not the lotus look alike strut issue. It has the SA strengthener and I can't detect strut tops have been done.

Just had another look i was having trouble last night with the pics, its the 1200 that looks like the passenger strut top is higher, wing sticks up above bonnet in that area, the two white ones look to have had a lot of work done so whats under anybody knows, i mean on the SA one if they cant get the front looking right what have they bodged
from the pics and description the GT just looks a better honest motor.
 
I'd go for the GT. The 1200 is a gutless wonder and not economical at all, I owned one for three years. The GT is a lot more fun, The Lotus (not) lookalike, with the Carlos Fandango wheels , obviously sitting too high. My family also had a 1500 4 door, great car, went all over the continent with it. Eassy enough to swop the bits from a 1500 into a 1200 I suppose. But a shame to have to buy the one and then the bits.
Depends how much you want to keep it original. Easy to do an engine and box swap for a crossflow. The Custom guys love 'em.

Been busy looking, might have found what I am looking for. Viewing on Monday.
French import, LHD converted to RHD, 62k miles, GT 1966.

Depends how well the conversion was done and condition underneath.
Will report back.
GT looks like a better car to use and maybe hold value better?
 
Sad, disappointing trip from Devon to West Sussex.
Not grey as advertised but sandy beige.
Paint covered in runs and fish eyes / orange peel.
Panel gaps on wings way off.
Worn ball joints, leaking oil seals on gearbox, engine, rear axle.
Rotted brake hose.
Engine failed to pull, pinking like mad.
All instruments hard over, regulator problem most likely. Still it was ONLY 16k!!

Had to walk away, no effort had been made to ensure it at least ran OK prior to my booked visit.

Hunt continues.

Sounds like you did right to walk away, if thats the way its presented for sale its not been looked after so what about the hidden bits:eek:
you will find one they are out there if you are not in a rush.
 
I think you are looking for the impossible *rust free.*Fords made in the 60s were made to rust, over the seventies I had several mk 1s and with each one you got free membership of the David's isopon club. You could then while away many a happy weekend filling and shaping the many rust holes that ford thoughtfully designed into their cars. Sills one weekend, wings next. i had a lot of fun going sideways around corners and visiting fields through hedges the last one a 64 alloy panelled A bracket lotus was the best i bought it in19 73 for £175 and sold a few years ago for 19k (wish i still had it) We had a school visit to the ford factory when i was a kid amazed to see the care a production line worker took adjusting the panel fit by slamming the boot shut on a piece of wood ( operative must have previously worked for land rover) i am joking (a bit) about the rust, they are mechanically simple and easy to work on when u buy look carefully with a magnet and get yourself a 1500 two door GT and enjoy it
