i've been looking into this myself,
i have a commercial, and the vinyl panels in the rear have the bolt holes blanked off with plastic caps and the seatbelt run aperture is there.
i'll pull the vinyl out this savvo and have a look to see if there is anything going on behind, if so looks like a simple job/swap from a donor.
I don't know however if there are any legal issues with installing sideways facing seats now....anyone?

I don't think the earliest 3 doors had the holes as they were designed before the 5 doors. It wasn't till the 5 door came out that the seats became an option.

Ya can't fit a child seat in a side facing seat. but you can (if all the other seats are been used) put an unrestrained child in them?

I've got a very early 1990 3 door that has the seats in so they must have been an option early on.

yeh doable as a retro fit with respect to securing it to the car body, just had the interior panel out and theres a number of threaded holes in the inner wing skin.
Not sure how the seat belts are arranged though may have a nose up the breakers yard.

Don't forget to inform your insurance company's if you add seat's, or else the car's insurance could well be "null and void".

i've got a 5 door which didnt have the dickie seats in when i bought it so i fitted them myself as long as you change the details on the V5 its ok
