Hello,
My pre face-lift 200tdi has loss of steering fluid from the reservoir due to foaming.
Checked all connections - all tight with no leaks.
Steering pump makes a whining noise under load.
Is the pump a goosed?

Thanks for thoughts snd opinions.

The fluid is full of air, hence why it makes a noise when under load. Air is getting in some where, hose breaking down
oil seal or damaged header tank/cap seal ect. Now the pump is noisy its gandered.
Replace the all the old fluid & check the hoses an see if they are soft or cracked.

Many thanks. Sounds like pump and hoses need replacing.
 
If air can get in then the fluid can get out, try bleeding the system, I understand its as simple so undoing the bleed nipple on the top of the steering box and then turn the steering one way to full lock, then the other way to full lock.
Anyway Ive never had to do it, even when replacing the fluid which I did a couple of years a go for the first time, but the full/ correct bleeding procedure is stated in the workshop manual.

Ive never bled a landy steering either lol
 
I had something similar on my jag XJR, turned out the hose from reservoir to pump had a split in it, allowing the pump to suck in air and oil. Before you go much further replace that hose, it's 5/8" hose of I remember correctly and well worth checking πŸ‘
 
Does the D1 PAS reservoir have a built in bottom screen like on the D2 PAS reservoir? If so, it might be clogged and foam up like on the D2.
 
I've never had that issue in my 36 years of using an identical system in my two LRs. Luck or what? 😊
Maybe it's about mileage and the way the vehicle is serviced/used not age... my grandfather owned a Wartburg and a Trabant which were both more than 40 years old when he died(God rest his soul) and never had any issue with them while they looked like from a showroom... none of them had more than 1000 miles on the clock. Luck or what? :cool:
