 Hi Folks
Hope someone can help with my little problem i have had some fuel problems several weeks ago this was put down to a fuel pick up sender in the fuel tank .After about 600 miles went out one afternoon the disco would only do about 20 mph thought it was the same problem put some diesel cleaner in the fuel filter turned the engine over and it sounded like the bottom end was dropping out(mine nearly did) it did start and ran when i turned it over a second time same noise didnt start and now it sounds like the starter is,nt engaging onto anything could this be a flexi drive plate ? i enquired at my local landrover dealer flexi plate 49 quid but they are telling me i need a modified flywheel at 250 quid ,thought the torque convertor and flexi plate took place of the flywheel? can anybody shed any light on this please

You must tell us the year and model, engine and transmission type.

If the flex plate has failed (and they do) you should not try to start the engine again. The torque converter which is a damn big heavy thing is bolted to it, and also sleeved into a plann bearing at the gearbox end. You don't want to damage that bearing.

If it is an automatic as you say, and if the garage say you need a modified flywheel at 250 quid, then they are either LIARS, THIEVES or CRETINS, or a combination of all three because your system doesn't have a flywheel.

But DO NOT attempt to start the engine or drive the car if you suspect the flex drive plate has failed - you REALLY don't want to bugger your gearbox, do you?

Thanks for the info mate it proves i am not going doolaly.I thought it was strange when the MAIN DEALER parts man said it had a flywheel !
Not going to tackle it myself giving it to a mates garage .Cant do with laying under motors now . By the way its a 300tdi auto 1996 ES

Excellent.

Then a new flex plate will be about fifty notes, and you could ask them to pop in a new oil seal where the torque coverter (oil pump drive) sleeve enters the gearbox.
