i think iam right to say all standard TD5 s are flat at bottem end, not good for towing, mine is, i tow around 1400 KG,
Can any one tell me advantages and disadvantages of chipping her, ie fuel consumption.
And how much should it cost.
Thanks
Mark

I wouldnt describe my TD5 Disco as " flat " when i,m pulling a 3 ton mini digger on a 750kg Ifor williams !.

I feel that it pulls exactly as I would expect with that kind of weight on.

Is yours really painfully " flat " when towing ?.

Chipping a td5 is very good for improving the power and drivablity .fuel consumption is as befor or better (depending how you drive it with more power TE HE) Speak to gary at TD5 Alive it should cost around £350 to£400 but it is well worthwhile

I tow a heavy boat and don't experience any flatness, I have never considered chipping as I feel the cost would outweigh any gains.

Thanks lads for advice, maybe i need to get a bit more heavy on the pedal, i do tend to be a bit pussey foot, shes done 65000 so i would hope is ok but never driven one b4 but the old 300 seemed sharper at btm end,but once TD5 is wound up it goses like stink.
Thanks

Have you tried blanking off your EGR? I did mine and noticed an immediate improvement. I bought my TD5 for pulling my new boat which I am launching in a few weeks. I now feel better about how it will cope.

Hi Mark

This plate goes on the exhaust manifold and stops exhaust gases re-entering the engine via the EGR valve. It is designed to reduce omissions for the US and Japan I think. Blanking it has no effect on the MOT. The engine just gets cool clean air. If you search on the disco forums for EGR there is no end of info.

If you do a search on ebay for Discovery TD5 EGR blanking plate you will see it. You need the full kit costing 6.99.

It's really easy to fit although a little fiddly. This thread gives excellent fitting instructions...

I got mine to tow a Hardy Pilot. I am looking forward to seeing how the Disco copes with this. The weight of the rig is about 1600Kg so should be a piece of cake for it.

Hi Andy thanks for that will have a look.
Will be interested to know how you get on towing boat, i cant see 1600 kg being problem.
But friend of mine who has run dicos from day one for towing mini diggers, has just gone to a 03 TD5 and says pulling of is a problem on hills needs to slip clutch.

That's interesting. I noticed in the manual that it mentions pulling away in the low box then moving to the high box once under way. I am not sure how easy or practical this is. I havent tried it but thought it was worth mentioning.

Cheers

Hi Andy i think you will find it suggests that in all land rover manuels what ever model, but i can tell you from experiance with a 300 you will never need low box unless you are going vertical with 3 ton on back

And that is the self same High-Low range change box that they used to say DO NOT change from high to low or back again on the move!

My TD5 Disco has done many hundreds of miles (thousands?) towing at more than SIX TONS gross weight. There are techniques for heavy weight driving, and while I agree the TD5 is flat at low revs, it makes a fine tow-car all the same. At six tons plus my one will cruise along nicely on the motorway at 55 mph in among the trucks.

hi Charles out of interest what sort of MPG are you geting pulling that weight.
I find mine is always around 29 whatever iam doing, max tow around 1200 KG
