Hi, I had this. Changed the MAF and same problem. I was convinced it was the MAF. I disconnected the MAF, drove it for a few miles, Reconnected and reset fault codes (air temp and air volume come up)
. Then it was like teh ECU was looking at the new MAF. No further issues !!!! Not with the flat spot anyway !

Original MAF had different fault, poor starting and lumpy running. Changed MAF for £25 one, had flat spot and smokey at 1750 ish RPM. Did reset thing and all well. So my £25 MAF seems fine although fault seems to have been the ECU not reading it.

What I did was run the engine with MAF disconnected to generate 2 fault codes (air temp and vol) then reconnected new MAF and reset fault codes. It may be worth Redwood trying this reset with his existing MAF to see if flat spot goes ??
Anyone experienced this need to 'sort of reset' MAF ?? Mine is still smoke and flat spot free after 200 miles this weekend.

Another thing to check is the EGR vacuum pipe. The EGR only activates when the engine has warmed up, the vac pipe tends to perish and sticks the valve open.
Obviously if you have blanked the EGR, you can ignore this.

Perhaps the disconnect and reconnect could have been a dirty connection. I think I might have a sticking EGR as it only happened on two days but yesterday and today it was fine, I'll keep you informed of my discovery although I won't be able to look at her for another week.
Thanks for the replies and it's good to know that an Ebay £25 MAF works which is not surprising as Bosch has moved at least 15% of its works to Asian countries, probably parts slipping out of the back door and ending up on Ebay

also the vacuum pipe rubs on the gear box and you get a hole in it if you have this you will notice hard brakes as though it is not going to stop on a hill.
