Hi All , so went to replace cv boot rear , got the shaft out in 10 minutes no problem got it on the bench can NOT get the old CV joint off the shaft , i thought it was just a snap ring as per normal and you tap the centre and it drops off , letting me put the new boot on ..... It just will not come off , is that correct or am i being stupid here Thanks
 
Inboard or outboard joint?
If it's the inboard joint, then normal practice is to remove the outer joint (held with a snap ring), then remove both boots, filling the new one to the inner joint, before reassembling the shaft again.
In my experience, it's much less work to simply replace the shaft with a good condition second hand one. Good condition used FL2 rear shafts are cheap and plentiful on Ebay, which is what I fitted when I had a damaged boot. I paid £15 for a second hand, low mileage rust free genuine rear shaft.

Thanks for the reply , Yes it was the outboard CV i needed changing , NO WAY would it come off then i read from the manual
ended up having to buy a new one as i need the car for tomorrow long drive , so its done but yes ebay would of been my port of call if i had time

  • NOTE:The outer ConstantVelocity joint must not be removed from the shaft.The inner joint and gaiter have to be removed to facilitate gaiter replacement of the outer C.V.gaiter.The inner and outer gaiters are supplied together as a kit.

That's completely backwards to the way it's been since FWD cars were invented. :eek:

LOL tell me about it , ive done many CV joints and never had that , I smashed the F+++ out of it and NO way it was coming off .
anyway , live and learn , thanks for your help , booked into Bell engeneering think i need a new PTU , great ££££££
