Hi all,

Another week, another problem with my Landy.

After getting my turbo underboost issue fixed, I had since developed a rotation scraping sound from the gearbox/PTU.

Took to the same garage who resolved the underboost who told me it was likely the PTU - I asked if it could've been the Haldex unit but he said the car isn't fitted with one.
I was under the impression all FL2s were fitted with a Haldex?

I also don't have rear wheel drive which was discovered when trying to climb a muddy hill this weekend (only front wheels were spinning, even after maintaining RPM for a good moment). I thought this likely meant a failed Haldex unit?

Rear wheels turn, when spinning one wheel, the opposite rotates in the opposite direction so rear diff seems to be okay.

Just to clarify:
1. Were all FL2s fitted with a Haldex, is it possible that mine doesn't have one? (2009 model).
2. Is it likely the PTU that is faulty given the rear diff seems to be fine?

Currently have to replace the rear wheel bearings which was another nice surprise today so I'm in no major rush to fix the rear wheel drive issue.

As above, the Haldex is mounted to the front of the rear diff. If it's a 2WD model, it won't have a PTU, propshaft, Haldex/diff assembly or rear drive shafts and will be missing the TR/HDC selector inside the vehicle.
If all of the running gear is there, then the most likely issue is the PTU splines have stripped, which is very common.

I'm assuming that because the opposite rear wheel turns when I turn the other rear wheel that the rear diff/haldex should be okay?

Would a failed PTU make a this kind of sound?
I originally thought it might be an exhaust bracket that's loose (recently had car and DPF off the car).
Also wondering if the heat shield as we did some very light off roading
 
The PTU splines make clunking or buzzing noises when the first begin to slip, then go silent once worn out completely.
 
I may not be 100% correct but if you have a driving mode switch, you have a haldex unit.
The unit is a motorised clutch that changes the amount of torque applied to the rear wheels through the diff.
This depends on the position of the driving mode switch. For example in mud you would have 50/50 front and rear and in rain 80/20 front and rear. The motor can fail on the haldex, and the filter can blind over.
The haldex I think raise’s a fault on the ecu with either fault ( low pressure).

It's something the garage has recommend I replace, although I want to make doubly sure it's going to fix the noise in question.

Going to the in laws again this weekend so will put the car up on ramps and took a quick look at any exhaust/heat shield parts that could be scratching. I doubt it's something so simple but I replaced the turbo under the advice of three garages and it turned out not to be the turbo and instead be a relatively cheap fix by which point I was four figures into spending.

Ended up having to get rear bearings replaced as well so a quick diagnostic trip has turned into a nice surprise!
 
Garages always blame the turbo for loads of things, however the turbo is hardly ever to blame as it's very reliable.

It's pretty easy to check the PTU splines. Basically if you can turn the propshaft with the front wheels on the ground, then the splines have stripped. If the splines are stripped, it normally damages the input shaft of the PTU, which will also require replacement.

For some reason, I thought the Haldex was closer to the engine, not integrated into the rear diff - shows how much I know, eh?

I moved from the UK to Romania so unfortunately will have trouble getting anything from them without paying crazy shipping.

While I'd like having AWD for the winter, I just can't get hemorrhaging money every month, the missus will have my guts for garters! Had a hard time just now explaining why I took the car for a quick check over and came home 250 quid lighter for rear wheel bearings.

I sadly learned that the hard way, twice on the same car.

I'll give that a shot this weekend. Is there any other failures of the PTU other than worn splines?
I'm also having problems selecting third and fourth gear some times, I suspect low transmission oil, at least, that's all I hope it is.

So many problems with this car, the seller saw me coming.

Shame you didn't come here first.

An internal failure of the PTU gear set will cause loss of rear drive, but stripped splines are the most common failure.

I just saw a shiny Land Rover on the lot and with being a Brit, it was a taste of home and got blinded.

Thanks for that. I think I'm going to change the fluids of everything this weekend as it hasn't been done in the near year I've owned it.

If the PTU is buggered, I'd be in for a replacement PTU and a driveshaft? What're the things that typically need replacing with this issue?
 
You also need to establish which Haldex you have a gen 3 or gen 4 on a 2009 it most likely be the Gen 3 you can tell by the pump the Gen 3 has a plastic coat over the pump.
