Hi all very new to owning a 4x4 now I have noticed after a while it's shakes at 60 but it through the floor not the steering.
Have looked at the front drive shafts left and right cv joints no play and no knocking when turning which is the normal sign there going in a car is the the same with 4x4's as a newbie.
I have noticed there is around 10mm of play in the central shafts by the vcu bearings is the normal or do they need replacing and is this causing the shaking ?

It wouldn't be possible to be 100% certain but certainly sounds like them to me. I refitted my propshaft yesterday and didn't notice any play in the bearings.

Alibro cheers for that they do look in a bad way and was suspect at there being movement there but this being my first 4x4 little clueless really
 
Don't drive the car unless you want to spend over £300 on a new vcu.
Shaking could also be worn tyres, are they the same make on all 4 corners, they need to be. Don't drop below 3mm of tread, in my experience this causes bad ride handling.

Tyres are all the same make with good tread all way around. When I checked when it had started to shake look up about the vcu and said they should be cold and if hot sign it's on it's way out is this true ?
 
To be honest, I'm not daft enough to stick my hand on a piece of metal that's got moving parts in it, when it's been driven round.
Search '1 wheel up test' for a good way to check your vcu. I'm lazy, hence I put it in reverse on full lock, if it feels like the brakes are on, your vcu is buggered.

Ment when car was stopped cause if the vcu is buggered its always driving back wheels ain't it ?? Seems ok on reverse full lock just checked it. Hopefully have it sorted out Wednesday as going to garage and getting updated bearings from lr spares in town
 
If it's OK on full lock reverse, then there's no immediate problem. Do the one wheel up test when you get chance.
Rear wheels always have a small amount of power going to them.

forget about the one wheel up test its ridiculous....if car done over 70k..get recon vcu..thats recomended, if in doubt drop prop off till you can get a recon...drives in 2wd no prob,,as said if it reverses easy on full lock reverse should be ok

To be clear this is your personal opinion and a lot of experienced people disagree with you.
 
really...specialists at a major 4x4 repairer laugh there heads off down pub last year...these guys live breath and build and do events in them...i tend to take there opinion..as they say...if its done over 70k..replace..its a servicable part...key is the reverse test....

Yes really now please don't start on this rant again.

The reverse test is useful as is the one wheel up test.

 
Car has only done 47k miles so will get bearings changed as they look shot at and the movement in it. Also got told full lock forward if it's gone pushs the car forwards instead of turning as well. Very mixed opinion on this topic

Some people seem to have a personal mission to mock the one wheel up test but a lot of research has gone into it here and the results over many, many tests do seem to give a reliable indication of the condition of the VCU.

It's very similar in theory to Bell Engineerings recommended bench test but without having to remove from the vehicle.

The reverse test is reliable but will only tell you it's already knackered and replacement is urgent.
 
Thanks for all the advice people so will do wheel up test and change bearing and this should solve the problem do you think
