Hello all.
Quick question. Has anyone successfully changed the panel only on the tank cradle? In other words, grinding off the bit and sliding in new.

There was a thread a few years ago where someone fabricated their own panels to replace the rusted out originals but I cant remember who it was. Probably about 3 years ago.

No, but have changed many cradles !!

I would be worried about grinding so close to a plastic tank. Even if empty, you may damage it.

Not too bad to take off but you will need to drop the subframe and take the exhaust off its hangers and let it sit on top of lowered subframe. Other than that it is just the 4 bolts for the rear prop, take it off the diff and tie it out of the way.

Soak cradle bolt threads for a day before you start, particularly the ones at front end not car. If they round off or shear you are stuck.

I did replace the panels on one having taken the cradle off. I used 2mm checkerplate aluminium. Made a nice job and won't rust! Depends on the condition of your tubular sections as to whether it is worthwhile.

Hello all.
Sorry for the late reply. But thanks for yours. Thinking on it, may go with new cradle. All depends on another issue with the motor that I'll have to post in another thread.
Will be so unhappy to see this FL1 go. It passed its MOT today even given the rusty panel. Said it didn't compromise the tanks security, but needs addressing.
Cheers all.

I got rid of mine because it wasnt being used, I often regret it, mine was the 3 door 1.8 soft top with only about 55k on the clock. My local landy specialist told me it would be nothing but trouble but apart from a few minor issues it was very reliable.
