Oh dear me, I can tell it's a Land Rover... It's starting (or as ten case may be NOT)

It's first thing in the morning and when the car has been stood for more than about four hours.

The car starts perfectly once started (no smoke or other issues) - so I don't think is the crank sensor.

I don't think it's glow plugs because it's the middle of August.

So here's what happens.

Turn key - won't start.

Turn key - fumbles and tries to start - white smoke (fuel)

Depending on how long the car has been stood will take more and more turns before it fires.

Once fired up the engine burbles and runs rough with white smoke and eventually settles down and is absolutely fine until the next time.

**** I have a service kit and EGR blank to fit today - do you think this may help or am I whistling in the wind - I did wonder if the fuel filter could be corrupted?

**** Or is this likely to be injector bleed back into a pot and cost me a fortune?


Any, cheap, quick solutions gladly appreciated :)

Been loads of threads on TD4's and starting issues.
My advice is start with hpfp regulator O ring. its cheap, causes the issue you are describing and if its not that you have not spent a fortune. A couple of people have quite alot of money and found it was little blighter, so that would be where I would start. Link to one previous thread

I've trawled the threads here and, as you know, they are quite diverse.

I'll order a HPFP seal (thanks) - why would it misfire with unburnt fuel smoke if it's a fuel supply Issue, that's what I do t understand?

Assuming there is a good reason for the above, do I need to look at replacing the LPFP while I'm at it?

Ok I'll have to check on that - I wouln't know where to start with a back leak test.

Meanwhile, that bleddy o ring has gone up in price, it's 25 quid now :eek:

Is that the part for the FL1 55? I assume so and will order it

It should be unless they changed the engine from that year but I do not think so, M47 still tD4 it fits my FL 1 late 04 plate, to remove the regulator you will need to remove the starter motor also it makes the job easier, don't forget this is presuming it is the O-ring leak back test is first in my opinion. good luck, the photo's are of my spare HPFP I have, the last two pics are of the one on my FL now

Can someone explain how the leaky seal thingy (which I've ordered) causes over fuelling smoke?

The HPFP regulator seal will not be your trouble of over fuelling, but it could be the trouble of being a slow or even non starter, white smoke on start up could be one of the injectors out of spec, hence a leak back test or get it on a Hawkeye or T4 for a diagnostic health check.
 
Okay thanks. That's where I'm not understanding, it's a problem to start but once it's fired up there is a lot of smoke which doesn't happen when the engine is warmed after a minute or so. I couldn't see how the HPFP having a leaky seal would cause smoke?

The likelihood is injector trouble methinks.
 
Reason for the smoke is all the un burnt fuel from cranking, is your battery underperforming at cold start? Try giving it a charge overnight or straight to jumpstart to eliminate.
 
Just to add, on one of the other threads we have discussed that it could be bits from the O ring causing the problem with the injectors. My car has been doing the same as yours, but I am on holiday and its parked up for two weeks till tonight. I am worried it's not going to start tonight when I get home. That's going to be fun at 1 am in the morning. I will be replacing the o ring this coming weekend
 
I think that for the £8 the O ring kit costs, it's probably worth simply changing it, when a slow start problem appears.
The smoke on starting is likely the fuel is still dribbling into the cylinder, because of low rail pressure. Raise the pressure by replacing the O ring and normal atomisation takes place, white smoke gone ;)

Hi folks - again.

In the kit there two smaller rings and the larger black o ring - in Arctic2's 5th picture down left hand side - there was nothing (as per his picture) I assume that's where this ring goes???
