Hi, I bought a Freelander 2002 v6 just of resent, the problem is when changing from 1 to 2 it took some time and it will not go into 2 it will make are banging noise and jump to 4 then it will start flashing 4 and F.
But sometimes it selects normal.
Do I need to change the whole gearbox?

I'm having similar box issues myself. I'm pretty sure your issue could be solenoid related, so that's the place to start.

I was advised to purchase another gearbox

I don't know about SA, but here in the UK, the solenoids are readily available, although expensive. You need to have the gearbox codes read, so you can pinpoint what solenoid has failed. Then just order the replacement from a UK supplier, so most will ship worldwide. ;)

You could end up with a gearbox that has more problems than the one you have. If it's just a solenoid valve, then those are replaceable items with the box still in the car.

Do you have any idea the cost of the complete sole

I think a completely set of 9 is about £300, however there are some that fail more often that others, so there's no need to replace all of them.

This is why you need to have the codes read, so you only replace the failed one. The main gearbox supplier here only lists about 4, which are the most likely to fail.
Ashcroft sell common Jatco gearbox parts, and also a complete reconditioned gearbox.

Sussex autos also do Jatco gearbox parts, but require a phone call, but they are a good supplier.
